GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Assists patients with navigating health care and social service systems. Provides comprehensive interpretation and translation services for patients as needed. 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Assists patients in the community with accessing health care and social services resources, including connecting patients with resources and providing help completing necessary paperwork.
2.    Assists patients in accessing and understanding necessary health and wellness information provided by their medical provider and clinic.
3.    Refers patient concerns/issues to appropriate Medical Center professional staff such as Chaplains, Case Management, Financial Counseling, Patient Advocate etc.
4.    Provides accurate and effective interpretation for non-English speaking patients and patient with communication barriers (adults and children), their families, and Medical Center staff.  
5.    Provides accurate and effective translation of written documents, correspondence and brochures, handouts, or forms used by patients and families.
6.    Attends mandatory Medical Center training programs.
7.    Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.    High School diploma or GED
2.    Two years of experience as an interpreter
3.    Experience working with populations with communication and access barriers.
4.    Experience navigating health and social service systems
5.    Bi-lingual in specified language(s), including medical terminology
6.    Some flexibility in daytime hours and availability
7.    Must pass a BMC administered competency or language proficiency test and/or have documented experience interpreting in a medical setting for 2+ years
8.    Valid Driver’s License, regular availability of a personal vehicle, and evidence of automobile insurance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1.    Bachelor’s degree in required language or related field
2.    Classes/training in medical interpretation
3.    Previous experience as a community health navigator

4. Proficient in Swahili, Arabic, or Spanish
