The Healthcare Technician (HCT) reports to the Department Director and assists nurses in performing tasks related to basic patient care needs.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides basic care to patients of all ages, as assigned, under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN). Communicates patient observations, behaviors, and information related to the plan of care to the RN or Provider in a timely manner.
- Responds to medical emergencies to perform initial basic life support interventions (CPR) and behavioral health emergencies to maintain patient safety and use de-escalation techniques under the direction of an RN or Provider.
- Performs unit-specific skills which may include, but is not limited to, obtaining, reporting, and documentation of the patient condition, vital signs, height & weight, patient behaviors, Point of Care (POC) testing (blood glucose monitoring, hemoccult, urine pregnancy, etc.), obtaining specimens, and performing venipuncture.
- Maintains awareness, monitoring, safety procedures, and reporting of patients who demonstrate escalating, aggressive or dangerous behavior.
- Prepares for patient care activity by answering phones and restocking supplies in patient rooms and/or other care areas.
- Performs periodic assessment and equipment checks of patient care equipment such as defibrillators and supplies included in emergency response carts.
- Assists in admission and discharge procedures for patients of all ages, including assisting patients to and from personal vehicles.
- Adheres to specific Infection Prevention practices including Standard Precautions and Isolation practices when applicable.
- Records information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) in accordance with established standards.
- Maintains a clean and safe environment in the nursing unit and adheres to safety rules and regulations.
- Transports patients of all ages for necessary tests or treatments, as needed.
- Assists in identifying patient and family needs based on age-specific data.
- Implements provider’s orders as directed by the RN or Provider.
- Assists health care team members with exams or procedures within boundaries of job scope of service.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Attends unit meetings to individual departmental attendance expectations.
- Demonstrates flexibility regarding department assignments and schedules.
- Demonstrates competence in specified computer applications and ability to document effectively in the EMR system.
- Demonstrates appropriate decision-making skills within scope of practice.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of Basic Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course (75 hours minimum).
- Ability to obtain and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification throughout employment
