Reporting to the Head of General Industries, the Underwriting Officer for General Industries & Technology is a strategic and dynamic leader responsible Ensuring the quality, integrity, and effectiveness of underwriting decisions by setting clear policy, appetite, authority, and processes; managing portfolio risk, CAT exposure, and emerging risks; and maintaining strong alignment with product, actuarial, operations, and field leadership. Drive forward-looking underwriting strategy by advancing industry, geographic, and line-of-business priorities, evolving industry and referral teams, monitoring performance and market trends, and recommending actions to strengthen results and competitiveness.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and ensure the quality and integrity of Underwriting decisions for Business Units in scope – includes:  risk selection, risk evaluation, pricing policy, program structure and terms & conditions

  • Advance multidimensional Underwriting Priorities: Industry (Industry Teams), Geographic (DUO’s), Line of Business  (product/actuary), BU UW (Middle and Large, OCUO)

  • Continue evolution of Industry/Referral teams to include: Strategy Framework/Roadmap, internal networks and alignment with key specialized broker

  • Establish, review, maintain and refresh underwriting policy including referral and authority standards, delegation and procedures

  • Establish, maintain and refresh underwriting appetite in partnership with Product, Actuary, Industry, Middle and Large Underwriting Leaders

  • Manage CAT exposures and reinsurance treaty participation at direction of CUO and aligned with Corporate philosophy

  • Establish and maintain efficient underwriting process in partnership with operations, IT and underwriting

  • Maintain and ensure thoughtful process to understand, underwrite, educate and communicate emerging risks impact on underwriting strategy and execution.

  • Understand total risk profile of portfolio to include all current and prior risk (SAM, Property CAT, Terrorism, head trauma, product liability, etc.)

  • Identify trends in performance to set future strategy and develop recommendations for improvement/corrective actions

  • Work closely with field leadership to garner full view and understanding of external marketplace trends, anticipate customer needs and recommend proactive actions for product, appetite and process

  • Deploy and manage quality and compliance standards and refine as necessary to maintain integrity of portfolio

  • Work closely with learning team to address continuing education needs and educational opportunities

  • Demonstrate ability to excel in a matrix environment to yield successful financial and cultural outcomes

  • Strong connectivity with Multinational and Complex Property

  • LLA – assure lessons learned from large losses

Financial Responsibilities:

  • Steward the countrywide underwriting health of the portfolio in total and by product, industry and geographic sub-portfolios

  • Responsible for profitable growth, net rate, account segmentation by industry and LOB and Division

  • Manage pricing, including retention, segmentation and new growth relative to differentiation, loss cost trends and outlook targets

  • Participate in planning process in partnership with Business, Product and Actuary and Industry

  • FAC RE and treaty special acceptance decisions and process

Product/Actuary/Claims Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining close partnership with Product, Actuary and Claims to inform business and anticipate actions on pricing trends, loss reserve trends, threats and opportunities

  • Develop Industry and LOB strategies to advance profitable growth

  • Responsible for planning process portion that includes product and actuary outlook inputs

Talent:

  • Advance General Industries underwriting talent agenda for exceptional underwriting community, collaboration and cross sell skills and routines, mentoring career paths

  • SME for advanced learning investments, certifications, CORE Trainee, Underwriter Immersion Program

  • Maintain and ensure the technical acumen (coverage, limits, program structure) of underwriting staff in every line of business in scope

  • Accountable for Underwriting Authority delegation and execution

Distribution:

  • Provide input to underwriting strategies and practices with specific distribution partners as needed

  • Develop and nurture BU strategic alliances with distribution partners and clients

  • Maintain/develop an external industry presence

Strategic:

  • Partner on Low End initiatives

  • Partner with Head of General Industries in strategic roadmap for future of business

  • Partner with Small Business & Global Specialty Underwriting Officer to ensure alignment/collaboration

  • Work closely with all Underwriting Officers in Middle and Large

  • Contributes to forward‑looking initiatives that drive technology enablement, data‑informed decision making, and sustained workforce readiness as business needs evolve

Leadership:

  • Responsible to lead and accountable for development and coaching of all underwriting officers in the Business Unit

  • Driving a Continuing Education mentality across the underwriters in the Business Unit

  • Responsible to drive our Industry focused roadmap both internally and externally – with goal to differentiate The HIG and risk – to grow our business

  • Matrix report to both CUO of Middle and Large and Leader of General Industries and Field Ops

  • Champions UW Culture evolution in General Industries, Tech and Middle and Large overall

  • Proactive in advocating for the One Hartford mindset on the book and on the team

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of Middle Market Property and Casualty lines carrier underwriting experience

  • Exceptional leadership and people development skills, with 5+ years direct or indirect people leadership experience is required

  • Proven track record of leading complex portfolios and delivering profitable growth

  • Demonstrates strong underwriting acumen, enabling timely, high‑quality risk decisions

  • Brings prior leadership experience with a proven ability to lead through influence and accountability

  • Provides effective portfolio leadership, leveraging underwriting trends, product insights, and strategy to protect and expand profit margins

  • Ability to effectively interact with the C-suite and across all levels of the organization

  • Assesses, designs, and executes strategic initiatives aligned to business and financial objectives

  • Demonstrated bias for speed and execution that serves shareholders and customers.

  • Experience with digital transformation or technology-enabled underwriting

  • Builds strong, credible partnerships across internal and external stakeholders

  • Applies innovative and creative problem‑solving to complex business challenges

  • Leads and delivers complex projects with disciplined execution

  • Passion for customer-centricity and adaptive leadership.

  • This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working from any Hartford Regional office or Hub, at least 3 days a week

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$268,000 - $402,000
