Compensation Range:

$70,197.00 - $105,295.00

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

The University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) is looking to hire Sr. Opto-Mechanical Specialist to assist in project work and operations. We are looking for someone who is excited to learn, exceptionally reliable, and attentive to detail. Here at LLE, we take pride in being a national resource for research and education in both science and technology! Our focus is on using lasers to create fusion energy.

Operate, maintain and repair various experimental systems in the OMEGA and OMEGA EP facilities. The suite of equipment includes assorted styles and types of laser components, vacuum systems, IR Cameras, spectrometers, and Pockels Cell/driver electronics, x-ray spectrometers/cameras, neutron spectrometers/cameras, streak cameras, and laser subsystems. Leads projects, mentors junior staff, and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to achieve project goals in industries requiring precision optical systems.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Analysis and technical support of sustainment projects in the Omega laser relating to optical, mechanical, electrical, software, and controls infrastructure.  These projects will upgrade obsolete hardware and systems with modern design and span the project process from requirements gathering, hardware selection, installation planning, installation work, coordination of software changes, acceptance test creation and execution, and certification of equipment and software.  
  • Watch standing as a Shot Director for the Omega laser facility approximately 1 day per week following completion of training.  Perform operations and maintenance in the Omega facility 
  • Shift flexibility is required (Morning and Evening shifts)  


MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Associate's degree and 5 years of relevant, hands-on technical experience required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong technical aptitude preferred
  • Ability to work in a cleanroom environment preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills working in a team-based environment preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and ability to learn additional software preferred
  • Experience with optical, mechanical, electrical systems preferred
  • Experience with management preferred
  • Proficient with reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical schematics preferred
  • Technical writing experience and enjoy presenting materials preferred
