RESPONSIBILITIES: The Emergency Department Technician provides direct patient care and technical support under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role performs a variety of bedside and clinical support functions including patient monitoring, hygiene and mobility assistance, phlebotomy, EKGs, point-of-care testing, and assistance with procedures.
The ED Technician plays a critical role in supporting the clinical team, maintaining patient safety, and helping maximize patient throughput in the fast-paced emergency department environment.
Patient Care
Provide direct patient care including hygiene, skin care, mobility assistance, and patient transfers.
Deliver age-appropriate care to patients across the lifespan, incorporating developmental considerations into care practices.
Maintain patient safety by ensuring patient rooms are clean, organized, and free of hazards.
Assist patients with elimination needs including use of bedpans, urinals, and emesis basins.
Monitoring & Documentation
Monitor and document vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, respirations, and temperature.
Obtain and document weights, heights, abdominal girths, and pediatric head circumference as ordered.
Report significant changes in patient condition or vital signs to the RN immediately.
Record patient observations, intake and output, and other care activities accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
Clinical & Technical Support
Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection following established protocols.
Conduct EKGs and assist providers with examinations and simple procedures.
Prepare patients for procedures and examinations.
Assist with laceration repair and other minor procedures.
Maintain and manage equipment in coordination with unit leadership.
Point-of-Care Testing
Perform department-specific point-of-care testing including:
Glucose testing
Pregnancy testing
Urisys testing
iSTAT testing
Conduct required quality assurance and proficiency testing to maintain regulatory compliance.
Specimen Handling
Collect, label, and transport laboratory specimens including urine, stool, sputum, and wound cultures.
Ensure specimens are processed promptly and accurately according to department protocols.
Team Collaboration
Communicate effectively with nurses, physicians, and other care team members.
Provide patient updates based on observations and interactions.
Support team members with both clinical and non-clinical activities as needed.
Emergency Response
Recognize and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
Initiate emergency procedures and maintain patient safety at all times.
Department Operations
Maintain proper stocking of patient rooms and department supplies.
Maintain laboratory and POC testing areas in compliance with regulatory standards.
Support departmental initiatives focused on improving patient flow and throughput in the emergency department.
SCHEDULE:
Part-time, 32 hours a week
7:00am-3:30pm
Every other weekend, every other holiday

QUALIFICATIONS:
HS Diploma/ GED
Basic Life Saving, CPR through American Heart Association, required
EMT, ED/Urgent care experience or relative experience through the military medical units (Medic/Coreman training)
