General Description:
The IT Portfolio Management Office Senior Manager is responsible for leading the organization’s project and portfolio management function, aligning delivery with strategic objectives, and ensuring consistent application of PMO methodologies. This role provides oversight of Portfolio Managers and Project Managers, drives governance and strategic program delivery, and champions continuous improvement in project delivery, resource management, and portfolio performance.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions:
- Strategic Leadership: Shapes and evolves PMO standards, governance models, and delivery frameworks. Leads strategic improvements and organizational change initiatives that elevate PMO maturity and delivery capabilities.
- People Management: Provides visible leadership and oversight of Portfolio Managers and Project Managers, fostering a high-performance culture. Drive mentorship, coaching, and capability development opportunities across the PMO to build leadership pipeline. Establish performance expectations, conduct talent assessments, and support career progression for direct reports.
- Delivery Oversight: Oversees complex, high-visibility enterprise programs ensuring measurable strategic value and enterprise alignment. Hold Portfolio Managers accountable for delivery excellence and governance adherence. Intervene, when necessary, to resolve escalated delivery issues, remove systemic blockers, and ensure program success
- Delivery Oversight: Oversees enterprise programs to deliver strategic value and alignment; holds Portfolio Managers accountable for delivery/governance; resolves escalations and removes blockers to ensure success.
- Change Management and Adoption: Integrates organizational change management practices into portfolio governance, ensuring initiatives are sequenced effectively and supported by aligned communication, training, and adoption strategies to drive sustained business outcomes
- AI & Automation: Drives AI-enabled efficiencies including automated reporting, forecasting, dependency mapping, and workflow automation. Leads adoption of AI-supported project/portfolio practices.
- Toolset Optimization: Leads toolset optimization and modernization, ensuring PPM, collaboration, and reporting tools are fully utilized, integrated, and continuously improved. Evaluates emerging solutions to enhance delivery throughput. Drives tool adoption, data quality, and consistent usage throughout PMO.
- Stakeholder Management: Serves as strategic counterpart to Director of Portfolio Management to deliver executive-level reporting and drive enterprise alignment. Uses AI-enhanced visualization and reporting techniques. Build and maintain relationships with executive leadership to ensure PMO value is recognized and leveraged
- Governance & Compliance: Applies enterprise-level governance rigor, including predictive analytics, automated dashboards, and AI-supported compliance processes. Establish governance standards and hold Portfolio Managers accountable for compliance across their portfolios.
- Financial & Resource Management: Leads capacity planning for project portfolio. Uses AI-driven forecasting and scenario modeling to guide staffing decisions. Monitor budget management and variance reporting across portfolios.
- Portfolio Responsibilities: Lead portfolio optimization and sequencing, ensuring PPM data and dashboards enable strategic decision-making. Provide oversight of portfolio health, roadmap accuracy, and initiative alignment. Support strategic prioritization and resource allocation decisions in partnership with leadership
- Continuous Improvement: Leveraging automation, insights, and advanced delivery practices to improve project throughput and value realization. Champion innovation and delivery excellence, driving adoption of industry best practices across the PMO.
- Expected to maintain a regular and predictable work schedule and full attention to and engagement in work activities on behalf of the firm during business hours unless otherwise approved or required by applicable law.
- Special projects and duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- Enterprise-level strategic leadership with ability to shape PMO vision, governance models, and delivery frameworks aligned with organizational strategy
- People leadership and talent development expertise, including mentoring, coaching, and building high-performance teams of Portfolio and Project Managers
- Executive program oversight and delivery accountability for complex, high-visibility enterprise initiatives ensuring measurable strategic value
- Organizational change management leadership with ability to integrate change practices into portfolio governance and drive sustained adoption
- AI and automation proficiency, including championing AI-enabled efficiencies in reporting, forecasting, dependency mapping, and workflow optimization
- PPM toolset optimization and modernization leadership, ensuring enterprise tools are fully utilized, integrated, and continuously improved
- Capacity planning leadership using AI-driven forecasting and scenario modeling for resource investment decisions
- Stakeholder Engagement – Executive stakeholder engagement and communication, including C-suite relationship management and AI-enhanced visualization techniques
- Continuous Improvement – Continuous improvement and innovation leadership, driving PMO maturity progression, portfolio optimization, and adoption of industry best practices
- Knowledge of or ability to learn Microsoft Office Suite, or Microsoft 365.
Required Qualifications & Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related field
- 10+ years of progressive experience in project, program, and/or portfolio management
- Project Management Professional (PMP) required.
Preferred Qualifications & Education:
- Master’s degree in business, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related field
- Advanced program or portfolio management certification (PgMP®, PfMP®) strongly preferred.
- Agile or hybrid delivery certification (e.g., SAFe®, Disciplined Agile, CSM) preferred.
- Previous experience in a law firm a plus
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Moderate or advanced keyboard usage.
