The Raphael Center for Neurorestoration in the Farber Institute for Neuroscience seeks a Research Specialist to join our bench neuroscience laboratory focused on the computational properties of complex neural tissues grown on multi-electrode arrays. This position supports a highly collaborative research team that values teamwork and mentoring.
The successful candidate will perform experiments using cell culture and electrophysiology techniques under supervision to assist graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. This role combines hands-on experimental work with laboratory management responsibilities, requiring the ability to work independently while solving problems and maintaining detailed records.

Job Description

Experimental Work:

  • Conduct experiments using cell culture and electrophysiology techniques to meet research project objectives
  • Perform human and mouse cell culture, tissue harvesting, and human tissue preparation
  • Execute 2D cell and 3D organoid cultures, including aggregate, spheroid, and organoid preparation
  • Construct bespoke extracellular electrode arrays, including with 3D printing of molds and preparation of PDMS 
  • Conduct in vitro and in vivo experiments utilizing sterile cell culture, immunostaining, microscopy, viral transduction, cell isolations, cell transplantation, and tissue harvesting in rodent models and human specimens
  • Collect human specimens following IRB approved protocols
  • Assist graduate students and staff scientists with experimental procedures

Data Management and Analysis:

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data
  • Perform analysis of electrophysiology and imaging data
  • Create figures and prepare comprehensive reports
  • Maintain careful logs of all specimens
  • Maintain detailed records in hard copy lab notebooks and online ClickUp digital productivity tool
  • Present research results to Principal Investigators
  • Identify options for future studies and prepare summaries of findings

Laboratory Management:

  • Prepare and maintain cell cultures, make stock solutions, and aliquot reagents
  • Monitor reagent stocks and order supplies and reagents
  • Obtain quotes from sales representatives and select optimally priced laboratory reagents
  • Maintain inventory of lab supplies and equipment
  • Perform routine laboratory duties including autoclaving supplies and stocking materials
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and biosafety compliance records
  • Assist with equipment setup, maintenance, and transfer of laboratory protocols
  • Contribute to laboratory website and other new lab logistics as needed
  • Implement laboratory policies and procedures

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with Graduate Students , Staff Scientists, and Principal Investigators on experimental setups
  • Complete sections of externally reviewed documents
  • Participate in research team activities and mentoring initiatives
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
