Job Description

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Performs designated direct and indirect patient care activities to meet patient care needs. Monitors, promotes and maintains a safe patient care environment to facilitate safe and effective patient care, and reports any changes to RN.
  • Escorts patients to exam rooms and ensures proper identification.
  • Performs and documents vital signs, clinical care quality measures and medications along with medical history information.
  • Directly assists physicians in the performance of medical/surgical procedures as directed. Tests/procedures may include EKG’s, phlebotomy, Para’s/Thora’s, monitoring vital signs, Peripheral IV starts, collecting and transporting lab specimens and other tests as instructed.
  • Keeps patients informed of physician’s status.
  • Provides assistance in maintaining supplies and equipment available to ensure efficient unit operations. Checks expiration dates and replenishes supplies when needed, restocking work areas.
  • Patient flow management, Pre procedure phone calls, obtaining lab and clinical test data from physician offices. Calls for any outside reports or labs when necessary
  •  Reviews all orders for procedures and schedules according to the physician and open available  slots. Facilitates record review, chart preparation, form requests, and assists with scheduling procedures.
  • Work with the charge RN and the physicians to maintain appropriate schedule.
  • Triages all incoming calls. Answers patient questions regarding coordination of care.
  • Directs patients regarding follow-up appointments and assists with the proper departure of each patient.
  • Transmits messages and charts to physicians and nursing staff in a timely manner in accordance with office protocols and HIPAA.
  • Assists with all clinical duties as assigned.
  • Remains proficient and knowledgeable regarding the use and documentation requirements within information technology systems within established scope of practice.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required):

  • Knowledge of the operating principles, major issues, governmental regulations, and code of ethics for the healthcare industry, ability to apply this understanding appropriately to healthcare related situations.
  • Knowledge of the necessity and value of accuracy and attention to detail when given medical orders, ability to process medical information with high levels of accuracy.
  • Knowledge of personal care and hygiene necessary for quality of life, and ability to apply this knowledge to patients in need on a daily basis.
  • Knowledge of the risks faced by patients in a healthcare environment, and the ability to take steps to reduce these risks.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Medical Terminology required, previous nursing assistant or healthcare experience preferred.

Minimum Certifications, Registration or License Requirements:

  • Medical Assistant certification required. CPR Certification required
