Job Details

The primary function of the Staff Perfusionist is the safe operation and management of extracorporeal circulation equipment (heart/lung machine, veno-venous bypass, ventricular assist devices, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation) during any medical or surgical procedure where it is necessary to support or replace the patient’s cardiopulmonary/circulatory function (open-heart surgery, liver transplantation, etc.). In addition, the Staff Perfusionist is responsible for the set-up, delivery, management, maintenance, and operation of other relevant ancillary services, devices, and equipment including but not limited to blood gas monitoring, dACT and blood clotting management, VAD devices, ECMO, autologous blood salvage devices, etc.
This position requires providing service for adults (18 – 64 years), older adults (65 years and older), and the frail elderly in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional/developmental age of the individual served.

Job Description

Staff Perfusionists must be graduates of an accredited Perfusion School unless they began their perfusion career prior to April 15, 1981. If they started their perfusion career before April 15, 1981, they must have 2 years of college (60 credits) with an emphasis in science and have been continuously employed as a perfusionist for the past 5 years or more.  New graduates, as well as experienced perfusionists, will be considered for employment.

Certification: 

Staff Perfusionists are required to be Certified Clinical Perfusionists (CCP).  Exceptions:

Staff Perfusionist candidates, who are new graduates from accredited perfusion schools, will be required to take and pass both the written and clinical simulation portions of the certification exam within 3 years of their employment date.

Staff Perfusionist candidates, who are “board eligible” and have taken the certification exam three times or more without passing, will not be considered for employment. 

3.   Staff Perfusionist candidates who are “board eligible” and have not as yet taken the certification exam or have taken the certification exam less than three times without passing, will be required to take and pass both the written and clinical simulation portions of the certification exam within 2 years of their employment date.

License: 

The Staff Perfusionist is required to be licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine or the Pennsylvania State Board of Osteopathic Medicine and to be Certified (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
