The advising assistant director collaborates with pre-health and science primary faculty advisors & program directors to improve student’s overall academic experience. In addition to providing guidance on academic matters and course selection for a designated population of students, the assistant director serves as advising liaison to selected colleges, connecting students with appropriate resources and contacts throughout the university. The assistant director will collect, analyze, and distribute relevant data regarding student needs, preferences, and academic performance for use in college and university advising policy decisions.

Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  • Provide academic advising, student support, resource connection, and collaboration with faculty and staff from selected college majors in support of student retention.
  • Carry first-year advising caseload, including navigating academic issues, course planning, and major selection with priority focus on at-risk students in the pre-health and science majors.
  • Serve as advising liaison to selected college programs and university departments to facilitate student academic progress and retention.
  • Collect and analyze student academic progress data with the goal of improving advising methods and strategies for a defined population of students.
  • Collaborate with First-Year Faculty Advisors in selected majors, including college-specific policy review and implementation.
  • Oversee first-year advisor assignments.
  • Participate in all Academic Success Center events including New Student Orientation, Rams Resource Fair, FYS Class Presentations and new advising initiative programming.
  • Follow up on all Starfish and Degree works updates as needed and refer students to appropriate areas for support.
  • Build on retention initiatives and retention of all students with primary focus on at-risk students in the pre-health and science majors.

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required)

  • Experience working with traditional college-age students as an academic advisor required. Familiarity with Degreeworks, Banner, Starfish and Canvas.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred

AND

Experience:

  • 3-5 years working as an academic advisor, and experience working within a faculty advising model
