Eligibility:    Required - Undergraduate student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university and able to receive academic credit for the internship. Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication or a closely related field (e.g., Professional Writing, Rhetoric & Writing, Technical & Professional Communication, or Communication).


Job Summary
This academic-credit internship is designed for an undergraduate in Technical Communication (TC) who seeks hands-on experience applying writing, editing, and information design skills to real organizational projects. Over 10 weeks, the intern will partner with a department head and support one to three projects from initiation to completion. Project assignments will reflect both organizational priorities and the intern’s interests and strengths. Potential project areas include:

•    Grant writing and research
•    Human capital/HR process support
•    Policy and procedure development
•    Data management and documentation
•    Program or operational support

The intern will gather, organize, and translate information into clear, usable documents or project deliverables that align with FirstDay Foundation standards. This position is ideal for someone who values precision, collaboration, and the practical application of communication skills in the nonprofit sector.

Key Responsibilities

•    Collaborate with an assigned department head on defined projects during the 10-week term.
•    Draft, edit, and format documents such as policies, procedures, grant sections, or process guides.
•    Conduct background and contextual research to support grant writing, policy development, or human capital management efforts.
•    Input, clean, and organize data to support departmental reporting, evaluation, or compliance functions.
•    Interview or gather information from staff or subject matter experts (SMEs) as directed to complete assigned deliverables.
•    Follow organizational writing, style, and document control standards.
•    Provide weekly progress updates to the supervising department head.
•    Maintain version control on all deliverables.
•    Perform other related duties as assigned within the project scope.


Skills & Competencies
•    Excellent written communication skills; able to follow templates and models and adapt tone and style for a variety of audiences.
•    Detail-oriented and organized; able to track multiple tasks over time.
•    Self-motivated and dependable; able to take initiative after receiving guidance and work independently.
•    Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Teams) or equivalent tools; familiarity with cloud collaboration platforms (e.g., SharePoint, Google Workspace) is a plus.
•    Comfortable working remotely and managing time independently.
•    Intellectual curiosity and interest in applying writing to nonprofit and social impact contexts.

Time Commitment
•    Approximately 12 hours per week
•    10 weeks total
•    Starts January 20, 2026
•    Regular virtual meetings with the supervising department head.
