We are seeking a Staff Accountant 2 to join the Accounting Unit of our Office of Finance Administration at the Oregon Department of Education. This is a permanent position represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) 

 

This position follows a hybrid work model. Onsite presence will be required when business or operational needs are best supported in person, such as collaboration, training, or work that requires access to onsite resources. Employees approved to work remotely must have a reliable and secure internet connection and maintain a professional work environment that supports productivity. While working remotely, employees are expected to maintain the same level of performance, responsiveness, communication, and availability as they would in the office. 

 

What you will do!

Compile and analyze data for accurate financial and compliance reporting and oversee the agency Balance Transfer (BT) corrections and reclassification process.  This position offers the flexibility to work independently while also being part of a great team that collaborates. You'll have the freedom to lean into your strengths and do your best work, all while staying connected with teammates through meaningful interaction, even in a mostly remote environment. 
 

Typical duties include: 

 

  • Analyzing accounting data and coordinating correcting entries. 

  • Reviewing and releasing accounting transactions. 

  • Querying and reviewing data for financial or compliance reporting. 

  • Special projects might include updating procedures or preparing ad hoc reports

Minimum Qualifications: ODE reviews resumes to determine whether applicants meet the minimum qualifications for this position. Possession of a Certified Public Accountant or Certified Government Financial Manager certificate AND two years of accounting experience equivalent to Accountant 1 work to include setting-up ledgers, account codes and controls, and modifying accounting systems; OR 

A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or in any discipline that includes or is supplemented by 32 quarter (21 semester) credit hours from an accredited institution in Accounting AND two years of accounting experience equivalent to Accountant 1 work to include setting-up ledgers, account codes and controls, and modifying accounting systems; OR 

32 quarter (21 semester) credit hours from an accredited institution in Accounting AND four years of related accounting experience to include a) classifying, analyzing, and reconciling financial data and records; b) designing, recommending, and installing modifications of accounting methods, procedures, forms, and records; c) preparing financial statements and reports; d) analyzing and interpreting laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances to ensure the legality of financial transactions; and e) analyzing, interpreting, and making recommendations related to accounting transactions, accounts, and account relationships resulting in accounting entries. 

NOTE: 15 quarter (10 semester) graduate-level accounting credit hours may substitute for one year of accounting experience. Graduate-level courses used to satisfy the educational requirement may not be used to satisfy the experience requirement.

  • Advanced knowledge/education of accounting and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).   

  • Skill in applying specific rules, policies and procedures.   

  • Ability to track errors and exceptions through accounting records.  

  • Experience with data analysis using query application tools (examples OBIEE, Power BI, Hyperion) and application of analytical review techniques.   

  • Experience with SFMA (Statewide Financial Management Application)  

  • Excellent customer service skills in working with internal and external customers.
