The Oregon Department of Corrections is currently recruiting for a Boiler Operator. This exciting employment opportunity is with the Oregon Department of Corrections at the Oregon State Penitentiary (OSP) in Salem, Oregon.
This position is represented by Association of Oregon Corrections Employees (AOCE). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.
The Boiler Operator assists the Physical Plant Manager in overseeing and managing the maintenance program at the Oregon State Penitentiary. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all Physical Plant systems and equipment necessary to support institutional operations. Duties include performing a wide range of building trades work to maintain and improve facility infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include providing preventative maintenance on equipment and buildings; responding to emergency breakdowns; safely shutting down systems when required; maintaining inventory and ordering supplies; and completing general repairs to Physical Plant equipment, structures, systems, and grounds. The position may also assist other maintenance shops as needed.
Additionally, the Boiler Operator directs, instructs, and coordinates inmate work crews, ensuring all tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and to established standards. This role requires strict adherence to all Department of Corrections rules and procedures, institutional policies, and administrative directives, with a strong emphasis on maintaining and enforcing security protocols at all times.

NOTE: Some positions may require a Limited Maintenance Electrician (LME) or a Limited Energy Technician Class A (LEA) or Class B (LEB) license or equivalent, a Boiler-class 3 Service Mechanic license, or a Brazing certificate. Agencies will note this requirement at the time of recruitment.
Some positions may require a Universal Refrigerant Handling certificate or the ability to obtain the certification within six months of hire.

This position is located inside the Oregon State Penitentiary and works in close contact with adults in custody in the institution setting and may be exposed to hostile situations or incidents. Inherent custodial duties include the responsibility for personally handling AIC incidents in the employee’s immediate work area. The employee is responsible to prevent escapes from confinement by proper control of keys, tools, and contraband and documenting unusual incidents as they occur. The employee is subject to call back in the event of an emergency at which time he/she would be placed in any post in the institution.

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range to reflect an additional 6.95%.
