Provo City is hiring an Apprentice Power Line Worker to install, maintain, and repair power distribution lines and equipment for the Energy department.

This position is a four-year apprenticeship program with increasing responsibility connected to Provo’s electrical power distribution system.

What is the compensation package?

This position has a four-year apprenticeship with the following pay steps:

Year 1 - (G25) Starting at $33.43 per hour

Year 2 – (G27) $36.86

Year 3 – (G29) $40.64

Year 4 – (G31) $44.80

What are the main duties? (for the full classification specification, click here.

  • Assist, connect, install, maintain, and repair energized overhead and underground power transmission lines.

  • Operate line trucks, line working apparatus, and heavy equipment.

  • Troubleshoot power distribution equipment to determine problem.

  • Replace and repair fuse, grounds, and other electrical devices.

  • Work secondary voltages of 300 volts or less, unassisted with little or no supervision.

  • Work on 15,000-volt single phase lines with the guidance of a journey-level Power Line Worker.

  • Make connections and disconnections for customers.

  • Explain problems to public.

  • Assisting other employees as needed and perform other related duties as required.

 

What are the minimum qualifications?

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Any training or experience that demonstrates an ability to perform the work.

  • A valid, lawful Class A commercial driver license.

  • Within one year of hire, must successfully complete the IPSA’s corresponding exam for an Apprentice Power Line Worker.

 

What is the selection process?

Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on December 29, 2025. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.

If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
