What is the compensation package?
Pay: (G27, G29, G31) $26.74 - $44.80 per hour (depending on qualifications)

What are the main duties? (For the full classifications specification, click here.)
Conduct standard building inspections duties including examination of residential plans and/or responding to questions of the public.
Process building permits, subdivision plans, house-moving applications, and demolition permits.
Prepare records, applications, reports, and correspondence related to conformance or field inspection problems.
Perform code research.
Conduct field inspections of new and remodeled residential structures for code compliance, safety, and proper installation and use of materials.
Consult with contractors, owners, engineers, architects, and others and explain discrepancies or shortcomings of project.
Issue correction lists and orders to comply.
Assist in resolving disputes and may recommend construction be stopped until compliance is achieved.
Maintain records and prepare reports of activities and violations.
Assist in preparing cases for legal action.
Assist others as needed and perform other related duties as required.
What are the minimum requirements?
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required at all levels.
Level I
Utah Limited Building Inspector License.
Level II
Utah Limited Building Inspector License with ICC certification as either a residential combination inspector, commercial combination inspector, or plans examiner.
Level III
Utah Limited Building Inspector License with ICC certification as a full Combination Building Inspector or ICC certification as a plans examiner and certification as either a residential combination inspector or a commercial combination inspector.
What is the selection process?
Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on April 15, 2026. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.
If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
