Position Summary
The Indirect Tax Product Classification Specialist is responsible for leading product and service taxability mapping to support accurate indirect tax determination across tax engines. This role serves as a subject matter expert in digital and emerging product taxability and partners closely with Tax Advisory, Tax Technology, IT, and business stakeholders to ensure consistent, defensible, and audit‑ready taxability outcomes. The position plays a critical role in translating tax policy and regulatory guidance into executable system logic.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Lead product and service taxability mapping efforts, including mapping SKUs, item and service codes, spend categories, and product classes to tax engine categories.
Maintain and troubleshoot taxability drivers and mapping logic, including product class, usage class, purchase class, spend class, GL/account attributes, and flexible fields.
Serve as the subject matter expert for digital taxability, including SaaS, cloud‑based software, electronically delivered software and content, digital subscriptions, data services, and bundled offerings.
Interpret and apply U.S. multistate taxability rules for tangible personal property, digital goods, electronic services, bundled transactions, and multi‑location use.
Translate tax policy, statutes, and regulatory guidance into executable tax engine configurations.
Perform taxability research and analysis for complex or ambiguous items and document conclusions, assumptions, and supporting rationale.
Collaborate with Tax Advisory and Tax Technology teams to evaluate new or evolving products and maintain approved taxability positions.
Manage the taxability mapping lifecycle, including effective dating, version control, change management, and periodic reviews.
Execute quality assurance testing to identify unmapped or mis‑mapped items and resolve discrepancies within tax engines and downstream systems.
Develop and maintain mapping documentation, decision logs, SOPs, and audit‑support materials.
Partner cross functionally with IT, ERP, billing, eCommerce, procurement, and data teams to ensure accurate data alignment and system integration support.
Support implementation and post‑implementation activities, including issue resolution, reconciliation, and audit inquiries.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Tax, Information Systems, Technology, or related field
3–5 years of experience in indirect tax, tax technology, or taxability analysis required
Strong understanding of U.S. multistate sales and use tax principles.
Demonstrated experience performing product or service taxability mapping associated with a tax determination engine.
Experience with tax engines and platforms such as Avalara, ONESOURCE, and Vertex.
Preferred experience with complex industries such as manufacturing, healthcare and life sciences, telecommunications, hospitality, energy, utilities, and natural resources.
Preferred knowledge of digital products, SaaS, and electronically delivered service taxability.
Strong research, analytical, and documentation skills.
High proficiency in Excel and tax data analysis tools.
Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across cross‑functional teams.
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and quality control.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for employment-based visa sponsorship now or in the future. This position does not qualify for employment-based sponsorship.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Work Schedule: Regular, 40 hours/week
Travel: Less than 10%
