The USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism, founded in 2004, is seeking to hire a veteran editor to lead our award-winning non-profit journalism collaborative focused on health and health equity and working with ethnic media news outlets across California. The Collaborative News Editor will create educational programming, serve as project editor, mentor reporters at different skills levels and lead a learning and reporting effort that will involve 5-7 ethnic media outlets in California. As project manager, you’ll nurture esprit de corps and build a virtual newsroom among the reporters, newsroom leaders and their editorial colleagues, brainstorming on story ideas, editing copy and developing a learning curriculum with the program design and priorities established in collaboration with participating newsrooms. You will also be expected to track outcomes and contribute to reports on our progress. Here are prior stories from the past two years of the initiative, which won 14 regional and national awards in its first year.
This is a 40 hour per week, grant-funded, hybrid, staff position based in Los Angeles, with a two-day-weekly in-office requirement.
Preferred Qualifications:
Successful candidates should have at least 3-5 years in an editorial leadership role and demonstrated expertise in reporting and/or editing on social welfare, equity, health and health policy topics. Editing and project management experience are a must. Bilingual skills are a plus as are cross-platform skills. Journalists with experience in the ethnic media sector and candidates familiar with the California health policy landscape are especially encouraged. We seek applicants who are creative and enterprising with strong project management and editing skills, a collaborative spirit, health journalism expertise and the ability to keep a team on track, managing both long term goals and responding to breaking news opportunities and newsroom challenges.

About the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism
The Center for Health Journalism defines health broadly to support investigations and explanatory journalism on topics ranging from the unequal impacts of urban design, to climate change, including extreme heat and flooding, and the environmental burden of industry. The Center offers fellowship and symposia that supported nearly 200 journalists in 2024, including 85 reporters participating in intensive six month to one-year programs. We reach tens of thousands more annually through our webinars and web content. Our Center has produced groundbreaking journalism in partnership with thousands of journalists and newsrooms during its 21-year history. Reporting we’ve supported has changed laws, galvanized communities and led to new Congressional legislation.
The Center for Health Journalism has hosted news collaboratives for more than a decade. It is currently in the second year of its Ethnic Media Collaborative, which brings together eight outlets serving Black, Latino, Chinese and Vietnamese audiences in California. The Center provides project and editorial management for its news collaboratives, with a dedicated editor and a supporting team handling the details of distribution and coordinating deadlines and deliverables.
