Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) invites applications for a non-tenure track Associate or Full Research Professor position in the Marine Biomedical Research Program. We seek candidates with expertise in Natural Products Biosynthesis, Bioinformatics, and Synthetic Biology to advance the discovery and application of marine natural products. This position is located in Ft. Pierce, FL.

 

About HBOI

HBOI offers exceptional resources for marine natural products research, including:

·         A Microbial Library with more than 18,000 marine microbial isolates

·         Extensive collections of frozen and ethanol-preserved marine invertebrates, many from deep-water habitats

Position Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

·         Apply multi-omics approaches to identify and translate biosynthetic gene clusters into compounds with potential applications in human health and beyond

·         Conduct genome mining to connect gene clusters with chemical structures and vice versa

·         Contribute expertise in microbiology, fermentation, genome assembly, and metagenomic data analysis

·         Explore applications to environmental samples, including harmful algal blooms, aquaculture, and ocean health investigations

·         Develop innovative methods and software for screening, editing, storing, and analyzing DNA, RNA, and protein sequence data

Teaching Opportunities

While this is primarily a research-focused position, there are opportunities to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in:

·         Marine Biotechnology

·         Biosynthesis

·         Bioinformatics

·         Genomics

Candidates are expected to develop new understanding and strategies, technologies, or products that will lead to stewardship and wise use of the oceans. This position includes a start-up package, a lab, and office space.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate must possess an earned doctorate in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Synthetic Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Metabolic Engineering, Bioinformatics, Functional Genomics, or a closely related discipline at the time of application.

1) a strong publication record, (2) a well-funded, active research program commensurate with their level of experience, (3) skills in leadership and mentoring, and (4) the ability to work cooperatively with University and extramural partners on research that addresses contemporary and emerging issues in ocean science.
