Associate Actuary - Transactions

This role is a part of Venerable’s Strategy team which focuses on flow reinsurance and transaction assumption due diligence. This is a key role that supports transactions diligence and assumption derivations in most M&A projects and other growth opportunities. This is a dynamic, technical and high-profile role, where the candidate has the expectation to own and opportunity to drive their project’s responsibilities from start to implementation.


Primary responsibilities include:

  • Request, review, adjust and analyze raw experience data from other companies to prepare for assumption setting.

    • Must have the ability to use multiple tools (SQL, Power BI, R, etc.) to quickly and accurately review the data for completeness so that it is properly prepared for assumption setting.

    • Must have the ability to expand data analysis process to handle large datasets. This could include being able to quickly adjust and moderately complicated spreadsheet models into more flexible models such as power query and power pivot.

    • Gain quick familiarity with the team’s standard Power Bi assumption models.

  • Review, understand and explain company prospectus and unique product features

  • Prepare, review and present assumption recommendations in a timely fashion so that any requested revisions or additional analysis can be updated. It is imperative that any models produced must be dynamic for quick changes as this is often the case.

  • Gain deep understanding of the target company liabilities along with assumptions being tested so that sensitivity analysis can be fully explained and validated in a compressed timeline.

  • Must be comfortable suggesting and implementing technical model changes and be prepared to defend recommendations.

  • Develop and present well drafted, succinct, and visually engaging presentation materials to both technical audience as well as C-suite.

  • Interact and work with highly skilled people both internally (e.g., IT, Valuation, Finance) and externally (e.g., modeling outsourcing partner and investors)

Required Knowledge & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Finance or related business discipline

  • 6+ years financial, insurance industry, or actuarial experience

  • ASA, Career ASA or newly credentialed FSA

  • Excellent computer skills are required: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, proficient in SQL Server, Microsoft PowerBI, R, or Python, experience with Microsoft PowerPoint is a plus

  • Ability to appropriately and professionally communicate complex concepts across multiple and varied audiences; internal and external to their department or functional area

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines

  • Ability to use own knowledge to challenge current methodologies/approaches and develop and execute on solutions to complex actuarial problems

  • Experience with improving and optimizing processes and reflecting appropriate controls

  • Strong desire to learn and grow; shows willingness to gain expertise in other actuarial areas besides current areas of expertise to strengthen overall business knowledge

  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment

  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required

  • Ability to analyze and propose solutions for a range of technical actuarial issues
