The Lurie Center for Autism at Massachusetts General Hospital brings together comprehensive clinical care with cross-disciplinary research focused on identifying the causes of autism and developing models of improved treatment that maximize the potential of each individual across their lifespan. The pre-clinical research at the Lurie Center is focused on approaches that integrate advanced cellular, molecular, and animal behavior methods to understand the mechanisms underlying sex biases in the incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders and resulting behavioral alterations, the impact of perinatal perturbations, genetic risk factors, and neuro-immune interactions in development, with a focus on the perinatal immune system and mitochondrial development. This research is on the cutting edge of neuroscience and immunology and will advance our understanding of pediatric neuroimmunology through the study of basic developmental processes.

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Research Laboratory Manager, the Research Technician carries out a broad range of technical research and experimental activities and procedures. The work has a substantial in vivo component, including the dosing and breeding of mice as well as performance of rodent behavioral experiments. The Research Technician position supports the Lurie Center by conducting experiments aimed at determining the role of neural-immune interactions on behavioral outcomes. Experiments will include tissue dissections, cellular and molecular analyses of brain and placental tissue, microscopy, and behavioral analyses in rodent models using behavioral software.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepares basic solutions and performs base-level procedures as assigned (i.e. pipetting, cell and tissue culture, etc.).
- Performs animal handling, breeding, timed pregnancies, and animal colony maintenance as directed.
- Conducts animal behavioral experiments
- Conducts cellular and molecular experiments at the bench
- Maintains laboratory notebook assists with maintenance of animal colony database.
- Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed.
- Refers complex/unusual situations to supervisor and implements changes under direction.
- Maintains and requests supplies.
- Attends and may present research updates at staff meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Executes protocols of non-routine experiments

Candidates who are in the process of completing their bachelor's degree have a grace period of six months from their hire date (up to 1 year if starting per diem) to provide degree equivalency verification.

-Perform laboratory experiments following established protocols and procedures.
-Prepare and handle samples, reagents, and solutions, ensuring accuracy and adherence to safety guidelines.
-Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, conducting routine calibration and troubleshooting as needed.
-Record experimental data accurately and maintain organized records of procedures, protocols, and results.
-Compile and analyze data using appropriate statistical and analytical methods.
-Assist in data interpretation and presentation, contributing to research findings and reports.

Bachelor's degree required

Work Experience

Prior laboratory experience, either through academic coursework, internships, or employment. 1-2 years preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures.

  • Familiarity with common laboratory equipment and instruments used in research experiments.

  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and scientific software tools.

  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey experimental procedures, results, and challenges.
