Job Summary

General Summary: The Radiation Therapy Chief/Manager provides leadership and oversight for Proton Therapy Centers, CT simulation services, and brachytherapy within the Department of Radiation Oncology at MGH Boston.

This role is responsible for managing Staff, Senior and Lead Radiation Therapists while ensuring high-quality, safe and efficient patient care.

Serving as both a technical and clinical expert, the Radiation Therapy Manager oversees treatment delivery, simulation processes, patient scheduling, and staff operations. The position plays a key role in maintaining clinical excellence, optimizing workflows, and supporting a collaborative care environment.

The incumbent collaborates closely with radiation therapy managers across the MGB system to drive integration efforts, promote standardization, and support system-wide initiatives.

This role reports directly to the Director of Radiation Therapy – AMC Simulation and Special Procedures.


 

Qualifications

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Ensures the proper level of staffing is provided within all treatment areas and provides coverage as needed.
  • Reviews Schedules to monitor patient volumes between treatment units.
  • Works with Lead Therapists in developing new techniques or resolving clinical problems.
    • Resolves difficult set-ups and instruct staff members and students in this area
    • Practices continuous improvement and standardization of techniques
  • Assists in Managing the triage of emergent cases, coordinates all on-call activities, and negotiates scheduling of patients with other care team members.
  • Responsible for the safe and accurate utilization of all aspects of the electronic medical record (EMR) and Record and Verify system.
    • Demonstrates the ability to teach and assist others in the proper use of the system.
  • Possesses an advanced knowledge base and ability to accurately perform and teach all new start QA measures, weekly chart checks, scheduling, treatment, image review, and billing procedures involving the EMR system.
  • Manages team during equipment failures and notifies patients as well as all functional areas of the department.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Works with other Chief Therapist(s) throughout the MGB System in the enterprise’s mission to ensure technical pathways are consistent throughout.
  • Keeps abreast of MGH institutional initiatives that may need to dovetail with program implementations.
  • Responsible for maintaining and ordering radiation treatment supplies and immobilization devices. May be required to work with vendors to organize training sessions for staff.
  • Works with others to develop, revise, implement and maintain policies and procedures pertinent to external beam treatments, and new programs and personnel.
  • Ensures radiation therapist competence and compliance with mandatory annual competencies, including, but not limited to: Specific machine techniques and procedures, department policies and procedures, and other activities and techniques that arise as practices change.
  • Participates in the departmental Quality Improvement (QI) committee.
    • Assist with developing, collecting data, and presenting QI initiatives pertinent to the departmental treatment activities.
  • Performs annual merit reviews for clinical aides, Staff, Senior, and Lead radiation therapists.
  • In conjunction, the MGH Radiation Therapy Manger – Photons :
    • Maintain a comprehensive orientation plan for new therapy staff of designated work areas.
    • Recruit / hire highly skilled Radiation Therapist staff.
    • Coordinates and adapts to contingency plans, which are in response to variables in patient volume.
    • Works with Director to assess financial resources, operational budget, and capital expenditures, related to BWH therapist staffing
    • Hold regularly scheduled staff meetings
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance and participating in all readiness related to:
    • ACR accreditation
    • Massachusetts DPH
    • Joint Commission
  • Coordinates with the Clinical Radiation Therapy Program Director, the clinical assignment, instruction, and evaluation of Radiation Therapy students.
    • Responsible for signing up Radiation Therapy Students for BWH Occupational Health clearance and Orientation.
    • Responsible for the orientation of Radiation Therapy students.
    • Responsible for student logins, competencies, and oral competency exams.
    • Responsible for providing feedback for student evaluations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This includes but is not limited to demonstrating efficient knowledge of all equipment operation, tools, and procedures specific to assigned area. This also includes demonstrating the ability to effectively troubleshoot issues as they arise.

  • Must be proficient in the use of the Radiation Oncology Information Systems and software and Hospital Information Systems that integrate with the Department of Radiation Oncology, including, but not limited to: MOSAIQ, EPIC, AlignRT
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Access, Word and PowerPoint.
