Job Summary

Our lab in the MGH Department of Molecular Biology is looking for an independent and highly motivated Research Assistant to assist in the study of somatosensory and viscerosensory dysfunction in mouse models for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These projects utilize mouse genetics, behavioral, histological and electrophysiological approaches to understand how the sense of touch and GI functions are disrupted in various genetic mouse models of ASDs, and how we might develop potential therapeutics to improve the quality of life for autistic individuals.

Primary responsibilities are to complete experiments for research projects in collaboration with the project head and the PI of the laboratory. This individual will work under the supervision of the PI to help 1) maintain a mouse colony (mouse husbandry, including genotyping), 2) perform an array of behavioral experiments, 3) dissect mouse to tissue and perform immunohistochemical experiments, 4) acquire images using a confocal microscope, 5) perform standard behavioral and image analyses. The Research Assistant will be responsible for executing behavioral experiments, accurately recording experimental details, and communicating effectively about his/her work progress. Major duties include: working independently with close supervision to conduct routine experiments, collection and accurate recording of procedures and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering and preparing necessary reagents to conduct experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab. The candidate will set up and prepare routine experiments as directed, conduct the analysis of the results, monitor the quality and quantity of work performed, see that standards are met and maintained, and participate in the interpretation of the results of experiments through conferencing with senior lab personnel or the principal investigator to review data compared to the hypothesis being tested, and research methodology in instances of inexplicable data. The candidate will collaborate with the principal investigator in organizing material for publication and may present papers or appear as principal or secondary author in publications and ensure Public Access policy is adhered to.

Responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, organizing and preparing samples, conducting experiments, and recording and analyzing data.
