The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) is a major, long-term research program designed to address cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoporosis – the most frequent causes of death, disability and poor quality of life in postmenopausal women. It is one of the largest U.S. prevention studies of its kind and it is currently in its third extension. The WHI Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC) is located at Fred Hutch.

 

The WHI Statistical Programmer II provides key analytic support to the Statistics Unit (SU) at the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC). Support includes all phases of programming including analyses, data manipulation and management, algorithm design, coding, testing, and implementing programs for projects ranging from routine to complex.  The candidate should be capable of independent judgement in data management, quality control, and data liaison activities. Additionally, the candidate is expected to communicate effectively with other team members and be responsive to the needs of WHI investigators and staff as well as external agencies and scientific collaborators as required.  The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Statistics Unit Manager and will work closely with a team of statistical analysts. Incumbent receives direct supervision in performing work assignments, but with time and proven competence can gain independence in performing tasks.  Incumbent refers to the manager for all non-routine decisions.

Responsibilities

Support data-related study activities:

  • Create, manipulate, and manage data files for analysis.
  • Download, manage, and process data files from ancillary studies; perform deidentification and create documentation for sharing of these data files.
  • Assist with the preparation and distribution of study-related datasets into NIH repositories.
  • Review, document, and maintain databases and related project files.

Dissemination and Reporting:

  • Contribute to abstract, presentation, and manuscript development.
  • Communicate clearly with scientific and other staff.
  • Interpret the scientific needs of investigators, statisticians, and other staff into implementable data solutions.
  • Serve as a reference resource to internal and external collaborators with data questions.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with project team to ensure timely delivery of data for a variety of projects and analyses.

Maintain high data quality and security standard:

  • Participate in meetings regarding data quality assurance and analysis.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop and implement standardized formats for documentation and data files.
  • Perform routine audits to ensure quality of the data and integrity of the databases.
  • Participate as needed in reviews of code, security, and procedures.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s (with at least 2 years of professional experience) or Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, computer science, data science, informatics, mathematics or other related field.
  • At least 1 year experience with statistical programming/analysis software like SAS or R.
  • Ability to write documentation for programs, systems, and databases.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Work well individually and as a team with a diverse group of researchers across disciplines.
  • Commitment to clean coding practices and thorough, user-friendly documentation.
  • Experience in statistical programming, big data tools, machine learning, and data science.
  • Experience with at least one scripting or programming language for scientific computing (e.g. Python, Java, Javascript).
  • Experience in programming support of scientific research
  • Knowledge of healthcare systems, medical coding, and claims data and/or background in medical field.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $88,712 to $133,057, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.This position is not eligible for H1-B sponsorship at this time.Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees a comprehensive benefits package designed to enhance health, well-being, and financial security.
