Under general supervision, performs necessary maintenance and repairs to traffic control equipment to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow. Performs other duties as assigned1. Ability to respond to trouble calls on signalized traffic control devices, identify and repair the electronic and electrical circuits causing any malfunction and to document those repairs.
2. Ability to perform maintenance on electronic and electrical systems associated with traffic controllers, traffic computer systems, fiber connections, school zone controls, high water response circuits and other electronic and electrical circuits used in the City.
3. Ability to understand and interpret Engineering drawings and plans for construction of new signals and modification of existing signals including installation of accessible pedestrian signal system, construction of pedestrian crossings, signal pre-emption system to modify signal timing, traffic cameras, and illuminated street signs.
4. Ability to perform preventative maintenance on traffic control equipment using meters, and laptop computers to check designated operation, collect control equipment data and change timing programs associated with intersection or coordinated system operations.
5. Ability to operate required trucks and vehicles for emergency operations response including dump trucks, sanders, emergency response trailer, salt brine spreaders, snowplows, temporary stop signs, generators, chain saws, and miscellaneous hand tools.
6. Ability to cover on-call for after-hours signal issues including outages and other miscellaneous signal component malfunctions.
7. Ability to understand and interpret Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TxMUTCD), and Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) rules and regulations related to setup and maintenance of all work zone traffic control devices for performance of work.
Knowledge of basic electrical and electronic theories.
Knowledge of TxDOT safety rules and guidelines.
Knowledge and understanding of the Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD) and TEEX guidelines.
Knowledge of International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) guidelines for construction, installation, repair, and modification of traffic signal and safety systems.
Knowledge of and ability to use common tools in mechanical work.
Knowledge of departmental SOP's, JSA's and MSD's.
Knowledge of the use of various meters, scopes, and other test equipment.
Ability to maintain Confined Space Certification Training - portray role of Competent Person for assessment of potential hazards and monitoring of air quality during confined space entry.
Ability to understand specialized work management systems including CarteGraph software products.
Ability to learn electrical practices and departmental policies and regulations.
Ability to learn emergency response SOP's Ability to follow verbal and written directions.
Ability to work in an outdoor environment as well as an indoor environment.
Ability to lift to 75 pounds on a repetitive basis.
Ability to work safely in hazardous conditions.
Ability to receive detailed information through oral communications.
Ability to operate a variety of electrical/electronic equipment including but not limited to ohm meter and volt meter.
Frequently requires physical lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds.
Work environment varies and might involve exposure to situations that require the use of personal protective equipment.
Periodically work involves exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
Ability to operate a commercial motorized vehicle.
One (1) year of construction and electrical experience required. Confined Space Certification. Valid Texas Class C License and ability to obtain class "A" commercial driver's license within six (6) months of employment. Must obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level 1 Field within 1 year of employment
