The University of Richmond Department of Rhetoric and Communication Studies invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Media Studies. The appointment will begin in the 2026–27 academic year.

The Department seeks a teacher-scholar with a focus on emerging technologies that will further the department’s interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum in rhetoric, communication, and media studies. Areas of focus might include, but are not limited to, algorithms, AI, infrastructure, extended reality, information science, platform studies, and game studies. A Ph.D. in Media Studies or a related field is required at the time of appointment. The Department welcomes applications from scholars with transdisciplinary approaches and degrees engaged in cutting-edge research who are committed to fostering academically challenging, inclusive, and high-impact learning environments that support and engage a diverse student body. We are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching, scholarship, and service resonate with both the University’s strategic plan—which emphasizes academic excellence, belonging and community, access and affordability, well-being, and experiential learning and community engagement—and the department’s commitment to intellectual curiosity, ethical inquiry, and collaborative learning. We are committed to a supportive and collegial environment where faculty thrive professionally and personally. For more information on the department and its programs, please see https://rhetoric.richmond.edu.

Candidates invited for a Zoom interview will be asked to send a teaching statement that articulates the candidate’s teaching philosophy, interests, and future professional development goals as well as involvement in and commitment to inclusive pedagogy. Candidates for this position may be asked, at a later date, to provide the names and contact information for three references who will be asked to submit letters of recommendation. Review of applications will commence September 15 and continue until the position is filled. Questions should be directed to Dr. Lauren Tilton, Search Chair, at ltilton@richmond.edu.
