JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The Senior Accountant serves as a lead technical expert and service leader within MCC’s best-in-class Financial Accounting team. Reporting to the Director of Financial Accounting and serving as the work lead for Accountant I and Accountant II positions, the incumbent is responsible for high-level accounting, strategic financial reporting, and leadership of the month-end, year-end, and audit processes.
This role oversees complex and high-risk accounts, provides direction and mentoring to Accountant I and II staff, and serves as a Workday Finance champion—leading system optimization, user adoption, and advanced reporting efforts. The Senior Accountant models a can-do, will-do attitude, builds strong cross-campus relationships, and ensures that Financial Accounting is viewed as a trusted, solutions-oriented partner.
Key duties include preparation of annual financial statements, management of endowments and debt service, oversight of capital project accounting, investment tracking, grant compliance, and leadership of cross-functional service improvement initiatives.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:
Strategic Accounting Leadership
- Lead preparation of the College’s annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP and GASB.
- Oversee accounting for endowments, debt service, capital projects, and other complex transactions.
- Ensure accuracy and integrity of high-impact accounts and reconciliations.
Audit and Compliance Oversight
- Direct audit preparation, serving as the primary liaison to external auditors.
- Ensure all audit requests are addressed accurately and timely; monitor implementation of recommendations.
- Stay current on new accounting standards and update policies accordingly.
Workday Optimization and Facilitation
- Lead enhancement of Workday Finance functionality, reporting capabilities, and user adoption.
- Provide advanced system training and serve as an escalation point for complex issues.
- Collaborate with IT and functional offices to improve workflows and efficiency.
Team and Culture Building
- Mentor and coach Accountant I and II staff, providing feedback and fostering professional growth.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives to improve responsiveness, accuracy, and service delivery.
- Model and promote a positive, collaborative work environment.
Continuous Improvement and Innovation
- Identify opportunities for automation, efficiency, and improved financial services.
- Champion initiatives that strengthen internal controls and stakeholder trust.
Other Duties
- Perform ad hoc projects and additional duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Accounting and Reconciliation Knowledge
- Expert knowledge of GAAP, GASB, and higher education/governmental accounting practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field; CPA preferred.
- 5–7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including audit preparation and leadership.
- Higher education or governmental accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and/or job-related work experience considered.
- Ability to travel between campuses.
- Must pass background check.
