General Purpose of Job:

Performs perfusion practices as it relates to patient specific support and treatment plans under the direct supervision of operating surgeon, anesthesiologist, or ICU attending.

  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines. 
  • Prepares and operates the cardiopulmonary bypass machine during open heart surgery
  • Chooses correct size cardiopulmonary bypass circuit for each patient.
  • Chooses patient dependent cannula sizes for each procedure.
  • Monitors and maintains normal patient physiology during CPB.
  • Communicates clearly and efficiently any patient changes to operating surgeon and anesthesia during procedure.
  • Provides autotransfusion services during and after cardiac procedure and to other parts of the hospital that may need autotransfusion services.
  • Provides and/or directs the provision of blood gas analysis, activated clotting times, heparin assay analysis, hemoconcentration, and mechanical circulatory support
  • Participates in quality control and research opportunities as assigned by director
  • Pursue educational and leadership opportunities to enhance professional growth and clinical expertise.
  • Takes on call responsibility for emergency heart procedures and ECMO as assigned by the director.
  • Facilitate communication between all members of the health care team.
  • Communicate with vendor representatives to stay abreast of new innovations in the industry.
  • Ensure appropriate in-service with staff and physicians on new equipment and supplies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

Graduation from an ABCP accredited perfusion program; Bachelor’s degree required.

Maintains CEUs for ABCP and TMB licensure

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations.

ABCP certification or licensed within 2 years from date of hire.

TMB Perfusion Licensure, or licensed within 2 years from date of hire.

Must maintain current CPR, ACLS, and PALS.
