Job Description
This is a rare opportunity to lead the transformation of pediatric neuroscience across South Carolina and help build one of the premier pediatric neuroscience programs in the Southeast.
Opportunity Thesis
Few opportunities combine the stability of an established children’s hospital with the chance to build something transformative. The next Division Chief will have the support, resources, and institutional commitment needed to shape pediatric neuroscience across South Carolina for decades to come.
The Division of Pediatric Neurology provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for children with neurological disorders, including epilepsy, cerebral palsy, headaches, movement disorders, and other complex conditions. The program is multidisciplinary and includes pediatric neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses, therapists, advanced practice providers, and other neuroscience partners.
The Division also supports an ACGME-accredited Child Neurology Residency Program that combines pediatric and neurology training and creates an important pipeline for future academic faculty recruitment.
MUSC is undertaking a comprehensive reinvestment in Pediatric Neurology through active faculty recruitment, advanced practice provider expansion, PRN coverage, innovative remote EEG partnerships, and a national search for visionary leadership. The Division Chief will have the opportunity to lead this strategic rebuilding effort with strong executive support for growth.
MUSC has made a substantial long-term commitment to building one of the premier pediatric neurology programs in the Southeast. The Department of Pediatrics and MUSC Children’s Health have approved a strategic expansion to 13 pediatric neurologist faculty positions, supported by a multidisciplinary team of advanced practice providers, nurses, therapists, and neuroscience specialists.
Strategic Investment:
13 approved pediatric neurologist faculty positions
6 advanced practice provider positions
Statewide outreach clinics
Comprehensive tele-neurology program
Growing Child Neurology residency program
Institutional Commitment:
Long-term vision for one of the Southeast’s largest academic pediatric neurology divisions
Integrated, team-based inpatient and ambulatory care
Expanded access across South Carolina
Improved specialty access for underserved communities
Pipeline for future faculty recruitment
MUSC’s long-term vision includes the development of a multidisciplinary Pediatric Neuroscience Institute integrating Pediatric Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuropsychology, Developmental Pediatrics, PM&R, Epilepsy, Stroke, Neurocritical Care, Neuromuscular Medicine, Movement Disorders, Headache, Neurodevelopment, and Fetal Neurology. The next Division Chief will have the opportunity to help design and lead an integrated neuroscience enterprise that improves care coordination, expands access, supports education and research, and positions MUSC as a regional destination for complex pediatric neuroscience care.
Charleston offers an exceptional coastal lifestyle with nationally recognized culture, outstanding restaurants, historic neighborhoods, excellent schools, outdoor recreation, and access to beaches, waterways, and family-friendly amenities. For candidates and families, Charleston provides a rare combination of academic opportunity, professional impact, and quality of life.
AMN Healthcare and MUSC have entered into an exclusive agreement for this search referenced in D3 in the partnership agreement. To create a seamless search process, there is an expectation that all candidates who apply to the internal MUSC application portal or contact members of the MUSC team directly be forwarded to Ben Moulton for vetting and process coordination.
Candidates may receive cobranded outreach or have a prior connection to the institution or a current faculty member, causing them to go directly to that contact to learn more. Please direct those candidates by email back to Ben Moulton. This demonstrates that the nationwide marketing campaign is working and allows all candidates to experience an equal, coordinated, and balanced process.
Process Alignment: The same level of information will be provided on all interested candidates, including level of interest, timing, needs, background, license verification, references, and other relevant details, regardless of origin. This helps eliminate perceived bias, supports equity in the decision-making process, protects the reputation of the program and institution, and allows MUSC to make the most informed decision when offering and onboarding a new faculty leader.
Response Rate and Time to Fill: For searches of this type, AMN Healthcare utilizes cobranded candidate sourcing and advertising campaigns to target pediatric neurology leaders and relevant academic faculty. The team will leverage MUSC’s name, logo, specific facility information, and Charleston location details to promote the opportunity extensively in the candidate market. Direct applicants and faculty referrals should be forwarded to AMN Healthcare so the team can begin the vetting process immediately.
The benefit of sharing direct applicant information with AMN Healthcare is that the search consultants can screen candidates who are not qualified or seriously committed to interviewing and/or accepting the opportunity, which saves the MUSC team time and supports a more consistent candidate experience.
Note: MUSC may exclude candidates who are already in the interview process as well as current MUSC fellows, as appropriate.
