Job Summary:

Performs standard chemical and bacteriological analyses and investigations on wastewater, gases, industrial wastes and receiving waters; assists with more complex investigations and analyses, and with assigned phases of research projects; and performs other related duties as required.

  • Conducts standard chemical and bacteriological analyses of wastewater, gases, industrial waste and receiving waters;

  • Participates in the placement of automatic samplers at various collection sites;

  • Collects sediment, water column and bottom samples for analysis, assuming responsibility for collected samples, transporting to lab and ensuring compliance with storage and transporting guidelines;

  • Makes and records pertinent field observations;

  • Familiarizes self with industries to be examined for industrial wastewater surveys;

  • Monitors the compliance of industrial and commercial establishments with regard to applicable provisions of County ordinances;

  • Prepares reports on routine analysis, special projects, quality control and other operational issues, ensuring quality standards and schedules are met;

  • Assists in isolation procedures for the detection of pollution-indicating bacteria;

  • Assists with biomonitoring analyses;

  • Assists in completing the more complex investigations and analysis, and in assigned phases of research projects;

  • Prepares for and initiates toxicity bioassays after consultation with higher level specialists;

  • Keeps records of procedures, observations and results to be interpreted by higher level sanitary chemists;

  • Provides laboratory support to division personnel in determining the source of unknown water seepage problems, for preparing environmental impact statements, or participating in water quality studies and special projects;

  • Assists plant operators in the tentative identification of protozoa, bacteria, algae, fungi in activated sludge and other processes;

  • Prepares various reagents and carries out the required standardization procedures;

  • Implements improved work methods and operating practices and procedures;

  • Reads technical literature to keep abreast of new developments in water pollution control, environmental microbiology, and biomonitoring procedures and techniques;

  • Cleans and maintains laboratory apparatus and equipment; and

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Training and Experience: 

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in chemistry, a biological science or a related field.
