Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of two or more pieces of construction equipment in the performance of construction and maintenance work; and performs other related duties as required.Examples of Duties:

Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance used in the construction, repair, maintenance, renovations and improvement of facilities, infrastructure, and other properties under the jurisdiction of the department.
Supervises and participates in the leveling, grading and reshaping of land; and leveling and clearing land of rocks, boulders, brushes, trees, debris and other obstructions.
Supervises and participates in the loading and unloading of trucks and equipment.
Checks equipment, prior to, during and after operations for proper and safe operations.
Checks requirements for fuel, lubricants, water and air, and supplies these to equipment as needed.
Regularly cleans, lubricates and maintains equipment and vehicles.
Submits reports on condition and usage of equipment.
Assists in the excavation and backfill of trenches, demolition and removal of concrete slabs, etc. to facilitate construction, renovations and/or repair work.
Makes minor emergency repairs and adjustments to equipment and reports defects and malfunctions.
Inspects equipment and working conditions for health, safety and occupational hazards and enforces safety regulations.
May operate a truck and/or trailer to haul equipment, fuel, materials and debris to and from job sites.
May be required to perform light and heavy manual labor.
Attends and participates in safety seminars, first aid classes and other trainings.
Minimum Qualifications:
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and
License Requirement:
Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A) and a current State of Hawaii DOT examination certificate.
Applicants must be certified by the county trainer on the following equipment or have four (4) years of work experience in the operation of:
8 cubic yard Dump Truck and Mini Excavator.
Tests:
Applicants will be required to qualify on a written examination and a performance examination.
Please note exams are held ONLY on Kaua'i. We do NOT conduct testing in other jurisdictions.
When attending the written and performance examinations, please be prompt. There will be no admittance if you are late.
No spectators are allowed at testing site(s).
The written examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of 1/5/2026.
The performance examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of 1/12/2026.
