Graduate Assistant - Learning Services

Job Description:

The Graduate Assistant (GA) in Learning Services provides academic support to undergraduate students, particularly those with documented disabilities and students placed on academic probation or dismissal alert. This role offers graduate students an opportunity to gain experience in student support services, academic coaching, and higher education administration.
The GA works closely with students in one-on-one meetings to develop effective study strategies, organizational skills, time management practices, and self-management techniques that promote academic success and independence. In addition, the GA assists with the coordination and proctoring of make-up exams for students without academic accommodations, helping ensure a fair and structured testing environment.
The Graduate Assistant reports directly to Denise Marjarum, Director of Learning Services, and collaborates with Learning Services staff to support student success initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct weekly one-on-one academic support meetings with undergraduate students, including students with disabilities and those on academic probation or dismissal alert.
  • Assist students in developing effective study strategies, organizational systems, time management skills, and self-management techniques tailored to individual needs.
  • Support the coordination, scheduling, and proctoring of exams for students with and without academic accommodations while ensuring compliance with institutional and department policies.
  • Participate in student progress discussions during Four-Week Review, midterm, and final grade review meetings as needed to support retention and student success efforts.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all student information in accordance with institutional policies and applicable privacy regulations.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Learning Services and other campus partners to enhance the effectiveness of academic support services.
  • Attend required trainings and professional development opportunities related to academic coaching, student success strategies, and disability support.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Learning Services.

Job Requirements: Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Must be accepted into a graduate program at Mount St. Mary’s University.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive student information.
  • Interest in student success, academic coaching, or higher education student support services.
  • Previous experience tutoring, mentoring, working with students with disabilities, or providing academic support is preferred.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other standard office or educational software.
  • Availability to work approximately 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters.

Salary, Hours, and Benefits

  • Stipend: $6,000 per academic year
  • Hours:  20 hours per week for 9 months (August–May)
  • Tuition Remission: Up to two graduate courses in the fall semester and two graduate courses in the spring semester.0
