The Assistant Chief Engineer serves as a senior leader within the engineering department, assisting the Chief Engineer in planning, directing, and overseeing all engineering activities. The Assistant Chief Engineer supports organizational goals by ensuring operational effectiveness, policy compliance, staff supervision, and community engagement. This role acts on behalf of the Chief Engineer during their absence and is responsible for the safe and effective operation of all data center machinery and systems.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

Tasks will include but not be limited to: 

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and enforcement of departmental engineering policies, procedures, and programs. 

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate engineering staff; participate in the selection, training, and professional development of personnel. 

  • Oversee daily engineering operations to ensure efficient and effective service delivery across all data center systems. 

  • Coordinate and manage responses to critical incidents, emergencies, or major projects as assigned. 

  • Review and prepare engineering reports, budgets, and recommendations for the Chief Engineer. 

  • Foster relationships with contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure high-quality service delivery. 

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to data center operations. 

  • Serve as Acting Chief Engineer when required. 

  • Represent the engineering department at internal and external meetings, events, or committees. 

  • Inspect physical conditions of data centers and equipment. Prepare work orders for repairs and requisitions for replacement of equipment as necessary. 

  • Maintain efficient use of energy in operating each data center by using sound energy management practices. 

  • Ensure the engineering team follows property accounting procedures including accurate completion of purchase orders, receiving reports, and service acknowledgments. 

  • Perform and oversee tests of data center systems. Record test procedures and results and make recommendations for changes in operations. 

  • Assures proper recording of equipment readings, settings, status changes, and noteworthy operating occurrences in appropriate logbooks. 

  • Ensures the availability of adequate operating inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies for the engineering team. 

  • Competitively bids and assists in preparation of all MEP service contracts to ensure high quality and cost-effective services. 

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • Assist Chief Engineer in directly supervising lead operating engineers and operating engineers. 

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with CyrusOne policies and applicable laws. 

  • Responsibilities include interviewing, training, and onboarding employees. 

  • Planning, assigning, and directing work. 

  • Appraising performance and providing constructive feedback. 

  • Addressing complaints and resolving problems. 

 

Minimum Requirements 

Education & Experience 

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent 

  • Five to seven years of engineering experience in data centers or critical environments 

  • Two to three years supervisory experience or experience as a Lead Engineer 

  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of data center HVAC, electrical, plumbing, automation, and life safety/fire protection systems 

  • Must have a thorough understanding of all data center related codes and standards 

  • Must be able to professionally interact with tenants and contractors 

  • Moderate knowledge of a variety of manual trades such as carpentry, electromechanical repair, etc. 

 

Language Skills 

  • Demonstrated verbal/written communication skills. 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, or governmental regulations and codes. 

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 

  • Ability to speak effectively before small groups of tenants or fellow employees. 

 

Other Skills and Abilities 

  • Ability to use drawings, specifications, shop math and various measuring or testing instruments. 

  • Working knowledge or the capability of developing proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Microsoft Access. 

  • Demonstration of leadership ability, presentation capabilities and organization skills.

Physical Requirements 

  • Walking large, campus-like settings 

  • Frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, stooping, and working/extending overhead, including: 

  • Lifting a minimum of 50 lbs 

  • Climbing stairs and navigating rooftops to access equipment 

  • Using ladders up to 30 ft and working from heights 

  • Ability to climb a ladder with a 300-lb weight limit 

  • Must be able to work different schedules 

  • Must be able to work Holidays 

  • Must be able to respond to site emergencies
