Job Description:

GENERAL PURPOSE

The Senior Digital Controls Engineer works collaboratively across the organization and performs a wide variety of duties including creation, modification, and implementation of machinery software around PLC, HMI, motion controllers, data collection and communication devices with a detailed emphasis on programming using assembly level languages, PLC languages, Visual C++ and other higher-level languages.  This role encourages others to discover, develop and apply their talents enabling them to reach their full potential.  Actively engages in our Lean journey by building and acting on continuous improvement and development opportunities. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create, develop, and implement software used in the development and maintenance of company products, machinery and related equipment.
  • Develop and deploy technologies to support the next generation of smart and connected industrial automation equipment
  • Provide solutions for new and existing product lines using the latest industrial automation components including PLCs, HMIs, motion controllers, data collection systems and other associated devices.
  • Build Machine Networking capabilities applying knowledge of IT, IoT, Remote Access Devices, Edge computing standards
  • Contribute to the overall machine intelligence strategy and solutions utilizing machine data collection for improved remote or onsite monitoring & troubleshooting
  • Drive collaboration and lead the technical transfer of knowledge between divisions.
  • Leverage the enterprise IT systems to create solutions for customers to connect to service tools, order parts, and access knowledge databases.
  • Maintain the controls engineering library documenting new technologies, code repositories and HMI feature sets.
  • Collaborate with division engineering teams to provide new data collection points to better understand equipment behavior and data analytics
  • Consult with leading industry partners to identify potential solutions for technical readiness within the product portfolio
  • Work with internal and external teams to develop and manage systems for machine data collection, storage, visualization and communication to other systems. 
  • Work with varying transmission methods of data both local and remote, also be able to work with visualization and analytics software. 
  • Work collaboratively to develop, maintain and implement current and future IoT solutions related to smart machine functionality and technologies for both new and used equipment.
  • Act as a high-level specialist, providing guidance in a team environment to production assembly, service, engineering teams and system suppliers to furnish information and documentation about software controls; perform check-out and correction of control system software as needed.
  • Remain current and proactively monitor and identify the latest industry developments and innovative technologies to move our product portfolio forward.
  • Project management to include planning, tracking, reporting, and timely execution of projects.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external Subject Matter Experts to develop engineering standards and functional system specifications.

EDUCATION

Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Automation/Controls or a related technical field, from an accredited college or university (OR a 2 year degree with a minimum 15 years of experience in an engineering, manufacturing or other technical position)

EXPERIENCE

  • Possess in-depth knowledge and experience with industry leading automated control platforms such as Rockwell, AB, Siemens, EXOR, B&R, Bosh RexRoth, etc. Understanding both hardware and software technologies offered, and the tools required for development and implementation.
  • Experience integrating new technologies and services with Enterprise IT solutions
  • Proven change agent and driven to impact the technology and processes while balancing organizational outcomes throughout the business
  • Identify, assess, and prove-out technical innovations that strengthen intelligent systems.
  • Understanding of Industrial Communication Networks (Ethernet, Ethernet I/P, DeviceNet, DH+, etc.) and associated programming software (Studio 5000, FactoryTalk, etc.) a plus

OTHER

  • Ability to travel, which may include internationally – less than 25% travel.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and the ability to obtain a passport.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • The ability to simultaneously organize and successfully execute multiple project responsibilities across a global team is required.
  • Track record implementing at least one of the following SCADA/MES platforms:  Ignition, Dynamics 365, Rockwell, Wonderware, or GE.
  • Proven ability to implement common OMAC standards like PACK ML, and solid understanding of modular programming techniques
