Underwriting Intern – Commercial Management Liability

The Underwriting Intern – Commercial Management Liability will support the underwriting team in executing AXIS’s underwriting strategy while gaining hands‑on exposure to specialty commercial insurance. This role is designed to provide practical experience in underwriting analysis, portfolio support, and broker interaction within a collaborative, professional environment.

The intern will work alongside experienced underwriters and gain exposure to Management Liability product lines, including Directors & Officers (D&O), Employment Practices Liability (EPLI), Fiduciary Liability, and Crime. These products support publicly traded companies, privately held organizations, and not‑for‑profit entities, written on both an admitted and non‑admitted basis.

This internship offers an excellent opportunity to learn the fundamentals of specialty underwriting, financial analysis, and risk evaluation while developing professional skills in a real‑world setting.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support underwriters in the day‑to‑day underwriting of Commercial Management Liability risks
  • Assist with reviewing submissions, applications, and underwriting documentation
  • Help analyze basic financial information and company profiles to support risk evaluation
  • Participate in renewal and new business underwriting processes, including data entry and file organization
  • Assist with maintaining underwriting files and ensuring compliance with internal guidelines and best practices
  • Support collaboration with brokers, claims, actuarial, and other internal partners
  • Help prepare reports, portfolio summaries, and presentations as needed
  • Participate in audits, quality reviews, and internal projects focused on underwriting improvement
  • Gain exposure to underwriting tools, systems, and governance processes
  • Contribute to a team culture that values collaboration, professionalism, diversity, and continuous learning

Required Education, Training & Experience

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Risk Management & Insurance, Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field)
  • Strong interest in commercial insurance and underwriting
  • Basic understanding of financial concepts and willingness to learn insurance fundamentals
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Office tools preferred
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively in a team environment

For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $19.00 to $20.00. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.  

In addition, you will be offered competitive target incentive compensation, with awards based on overall corporate and individual performance.
