Job Description:
The Instructional Laboratory Specialist provides advanced technical and pedagogical support for the Department of Physics instructional mission, with a heavy concentration (approx. 80%) on the Astronomy program and Ladd Observatory operations. This position functions as a technical specialist who bridges the gap between complex instrumentation and student learning.
The Instructional Laboratory Specialist works under the general supervision of the Laboratory Physicist but coordinates daily workflows and strategic priorities directly with the Manager, Astronomy Labs & Outreach regarding astronomy coursework and observatory operations, and the Demonstrations Manager regarding lecture demonstrations and department media (approx. 20%).
Key functions include the deployment and maintenance of precision astronomical equipment, the technical training of Teaching Assistants (TAs), the development and fabrication of new laboratory apparatus, and the execution of public outreach programs. This role safeguards critical institutional knowledge and ensures the continuity of laboratory operations by providing expert support to faculty, staff, and students.
This is a fixed-term position, with possibility for renewal each year, depending on the funding source. It is a fully onsite position.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Astronomy, or a related physical science required. Minimum of 3 years of related experience in an instructional laboratory, observatory, or science outreach setting (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Demonstrated proficiency in the operation and maintenance of astronomical instrumentation (telescopes, mounts, CCD cameras).
Experience with technical fabrication tools and software (e.g., 3D printing, CAD/modeling, Adobe Creative Suite).
Experience in science communication or educational outreach.
Advanced understanding of optics, telescope alignment, and laboratory physics instrumentation.
Ability to work effectively within a matrixed team, coordinating priorities with multiple managers (Laboratory Physicist, Astronomy Manager, Demos Manager).
Strong ability to train staff (TAs) and explain complex technical concepts to students and the general public.
Proven ability to troubleshoot mechanical and technical issues under time pressure (e.g., during live labs or lectures).
Flexible availability to support evening laboratory sessions and nighttime observing events.
All offers of employment are contingent upon a criminal background check and education verification satisfactory to Brown University.
