Job Summary:

This role involves providing training and practical skills evaluations for boat operators, certifying their successful completion of examinations, and offering additional support for those who do not pass. As the Senior Pilot, you will also actively contribute to marina operations and foster positive relationships with coworkers, management, and the National Park Service.

 

The Details:Position Type: SeasonalSeason Dates: Mid May 2026 to Late September 2026Pay: $22.50/hourlySchedule: Typical schedule is 40 hours, 5 days per week (may include weekends, evenings, and holidays)

Responsibilities

  • Provides boat operation and written examination training for all boat operators
  • Performs practical skills evaluations for boat operator applicants
  • Certifies to Management the satisfactory completion of the required practical examination by operator applicants
  • Participates in special training for operator applicants who fail to successfully complete the written examination
  • Holds Senior Pilot position in conjunction with assignment as any other marina position
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with coworkers, NPS (National Park Service), and management
  • Assists in all other marina operations as assigned

Qualifications

  • Must pass written and practical seamanship examinations
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with no high-risk violations in the past 3 years
  • Must possess a valid FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit
  • Must be able to tie a proper Bowline and Cleat Hitch (Halyard) knot
  • Knowledge of rules and procedures for use of marine band radio
  • Knowledge of safety, emergency, and life-saving procedures
  • Training provided for current CPR and 1st Aid certification
  • Knowledge of park geography and history with a focus on Lake area
  • Public speaking skills
  • Knowledge of NPS (National Park Service) boating and fishing regulations
  • Supervision skills - Passengers and Crew
  • Knowledge of maintenance and operation of assigned equipment
  • Knowledge of weather patterns
  • Thorough knowledge of basic seamanship evidenced by a current and valid United States Coast Guard license to operate a vessel for hire. (100 Ton Inland Master required)
  • Ability to lead, train and support boat operator trainees
  • Instructional skills

Physical Requirements include:

  • Must pass DOT Physical
  • Must pass DOT pre-employment and random drug screens
  • Must be capable of lifting objects of up to 50 pounds
  • Must be capable of bending, lifting, and standing throughout a 10+ hour shift
  • Must have full function and usage of both hands
  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (sun, rain, snow, etc.)
  • for extended periods of time and provide proper attire for such weather conditions
  • Must be able to work at elevations in excess of 7700 feet
