Job Description

Protective Services Sergeant

The Protective Services Sergeant oversees security operations in assigned areas of the BYU campus to ensure the safety and security of people and property. This position area will be the Provo MTC. This includes implementing and maintaining security protocols, policies, and procedures to create a safe environment for staff, students, visitors, and university assets. The position is responsible for hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating part-time and student security personnel; managing reports and documentation; ensuring the upkeep of vehicles and equipment; and maintaining professional communication with university and law enforcement partners.

What you’ll do in this position:

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate part-time and student security employees.
  • Ensure adherence to university and department policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Review reports and documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Manage shift coverage, scheduling, and administrative duties.
  • Conduct inspections of security staff, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Provide clear communication and leadership to security personnel.
  • Respond to and manage security incidents, emergencies, and alarms.
  • Protect life and property and enforce campus safety, traffic, and parking policies.
  • Perform investigations, interviews, and documentation of suspicious or unauthorized activity.
  • Coordinate and work security coverage for special events, such as football games, Stadium of Fire, and campus activities.
  • Maintain proficiency with campus alarm, camera, and security systems.
  • Collaborate with campus departments, emergency services, and law enforcement partners.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required:

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Current or previous Utah POST Category I certification.
  • U.S. citizen.
  • Security management or law enforcement experience at the level of sergeant or higher.
  • Valid Utah Driver License with clean record.
  • Possession of a current Utah concealed carry permit.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to pass a thorough background investigation and physical exam.
  • Must meet and maintain annual physical fitness standards.
  • Proficiency in use of defensive tactics, firearms, Tasers, radios, handcuffs, and first aid.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, as well as BYU security policies and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise, mentor, and train student employees.
  • Strong decision-making skills, composure under pressure, and professionalism in crisis situations.

Preferred:

  • College degree or equivalent educational experience.
  • Familiarity with the Incident Command System and university emergency preparedness programs.
  • Experience working in campus or institutional security environments.
  • Knowledge of crime prevention theory and application.

Skills, abilities, and knowledge:

  • Leadership and supervisory ability to guide and mentor staff.
  • Thorough understanding of emergency response, investigation, and reporting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to act as a role model and lead with integrity, discretion, and professionalism.
  • Technical proficiency with security systems, computers, and communication equipment.
  • Ability to assess risk, solve problems, and maintain safety in high-pressure situations.

Pay Grade: 54

Typical Starting Pay: $46.00 to $51.78 an hour
