Job Description
Grounds Maintenance Supervisor
The Grounds Maintenance Lead oversees the care of 35+ acres, ensuring a neat, clean, and beautiful environment aligned with the purposes of Brigham Young University and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Responsibilities include landscaping tasks such as cleanliness, turf, tree, shrub, and weed maintenance, irrigation upkeep and repairs, snow removal, pest and disease reporting, and flowerbed design.
What you’ll do in this position:
Level 1
- General Cleanliness: Pick up litter, change garbage liners, remove illegal fliers, and clean after tasks.
- Turf Maintenance: Edge sidewalks and curbs, string trim, mow, clean grass clippings, report pests/disease, aerate, sod, and topdress
- Flower Care: Design, plant, water, weed, deadhead flowers, identify pests/diseases, coordinate chemical applications.
- Tree & Shrub Maintenance: Remove leaves/weeds, apply mulch, prune ground covers, identify pests/diseases, coordinate pruning and chemical applications
- Sprinkler Head Maintenance: Inspect, repair, adjust, and replace damaged heads; report valve/line issues.
- Operate WeatherTrak Irrigation Controls.
- Maintains hard surfaces including weeding cracks in curbs, gutters, and walks, blowing & sweeping and reporting vandalism
- Assist with Sweeper Operations: Help Heavy/Specialized Equipment Supervisor with sidewalk/road cleaning.
- Maintain Dead Plant List: Track plants for campus restoration.
- On-Call Snow Removal: Available 24/7 during the season for snow removal and communication to ensure campus safety.
- Removes snow for all public pedestrian and vehicle access areas, including walks, stairs, roads, parking lots, plazas, crosswalks, ADA areas
- Team Collaboration: Work with other snow removal teams to ensure efficient operations.
- Coordinate Events: Work with Special Events Supervisor to support activities in the work area.
- Manage Employee Records: Use Workday for approving time, hiring, raises, and terminations.
- Trains and mentors new employees
Level 2 - All the essential functions of a level 1 plus the following additional duties.
- Schedules and perform specialized tasks such as sodding, pruning, aerating, sprinkler audits, etc.
- Reports disease and breakage problems for trees and shrubs
- Maintains flower beds, including cultivating, fertilizing, pruning, and reporting disease and pest problems
- Coordinate Hard Surface Maintenance. Work with Hardscape Specialist on campus maintenance and submit service request for heavily weeded areas that need to be sprayed
- Equipment Care: Perform regular maintenance on all equipment.
- Maintains tool inventory
- Performs daily pre and post trip inspections
- Teaches safety to employees, ensures safe workplace practices and provides necessary safety equipment
- On-Call Snow Removal: Available 24/7 during the season for snow removal and communication to ensure campus safety.
- Removes snow for all public pedestrian and vehicle access areas, including walks, stairs, roads, parking lots, plazas, crosswalks, ADA areas, trails, and athletic fields.
- Team Collaboration: Work with other snow removal teams to ensure efficient operations
- Trains, mentors, and onboards new hires, lower-level employees, and other shop employees.

What qualifies you for this role:
Grounds Maintenance Supervisor 1
Required
- A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
- 2+ years grounds maintenance experience and leading a staff of a minimum of 8+ employees.
- Pass a post-offer physical exam.
- Demonstrate strong supervising, mentoring, and training skills.
- Hold a valid Driving Medical Certificate.
- Work courteously with university employees and visitors.
- Follow safety guidelines and procedures.
- Adhere to the University's Honor Code and grooming standards.
- Maintain effective computer and record-keeping skills.
Preferred
- 2+ years grounds maintenance experience and leading a staff of a minimum of 8+ employees
- Associate’s degree or higher in landscape maintenance or a related field
- One or more licenses and/or certification:
- Pesticide Applicator license
- Master Gardener certification
- QWEL (Quality Water Efficient Landscaper)
- ISA (International Society of Arborists)
- CGT (Certified Grounds Technician)
- LTC (Landscape Technician Certification)
Grounds Maintenance Supervisor 2
Required
- 4+ years grounds maintenance experience and leading a staff of a minimum of 8+ employees.
- Pass a post-offer physical exam.
- Demonstrate strong supervising, mentoring, and training skills.
- Hold a valid Driving Medical Certificate.
- Work courteously with university employees and visitors.
- Follow safety guidelines and procedures.

- Bachelor’s degree or higher in landscape maintenance or a related field.
Physical Exam and Lift Test
Required for both Level 1 and Level 2
Physical Effort
- Moderate – Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions
- Mowing: performed daily for approximately 4–8 hours. Requires hearing and eye protection, closed-toe shoes, gloves, and sunscreen.
- String trimmer, edger: performed daily for approximately 3–4 hours. Requires hearing and eye protection, closed-toe shoes, gloves, and sunscreen.
- Leaf vacuum: performed daily for approximately 1–2 hours. Requires hearing and eye protection, closed-toe shoes, gloves, and sunscreen.
- Blower: performed daily for approximately 2 hours. Requires hearing and eye protection, closed-toe shoes, gloves, and sunscreen.
- Misc. lifting (up to 50 lbs): performed three times per week for approximately 1 hour. Requires gloves and closed-toe shoes.
- Shovel, rake, cultivator: performed daily for approximately 1 hour. Requires gloves and closed-toe shoes.
- Seasonal flower planting (kneeling, bending, digging): Performed daily for 6–8 hours over a two-week period, twice per year. Requires gloves and closed-toe shoes.
- Snow removal – shovel and drive equipment: performed daily during snowstorms for approximately 3–18 hours. Requires warm, layered clothing including a coat, hat, gloves, boots, as well as hearing and eye protection.

- Frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quarters associated with physical requirements

Typical Starting Pay:
Supervisor 1 - Level 49: $47,500 - $61,500
Supervisor 2 - Level 50: $52,500 - $68,000
