OVERALL PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE
Employee functions under minimal supervision. Maintains safety for everyone and ensures continuous security. Follows the established guidelines and procedures in regular daily tasks. Must be mature, patient, and show evidence of personal qualities of character and be able to use good judgment. Unusual problems or deviations from policy are referred to supervisor on duty and/ or Deputy Director, and/ or the Director.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
To meet employment eligibility requirements for appointment as a Juvenile Supervision Officer, a person must (1) be twenty-one years of age or older (2) be of good moral character (e.g., no disqualifying criminal history pursuant to TAC 349.7 (a)(B-D) and 343.15(c); (3) have obtained a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED); (4) have a valid Texas driver's license; and (5) have a good driving record.
Preference may be given to applicants who: have acquired a Bachelor's Degree conferred by a college or university accredited by accrediting organization recognized by the coordinating board, Texas College and University System in criminology, corrections, social work, psychology, sociology, or other related field of study; have one or more year(s) of experience in full-time casework, corrections, or juvenile agency that deals with offenders, disadvantaged persons, emotionally disturbed and/or violent children; have served honorably in the U.S. military.
Certification / Recertification: To be eligible for certification the applicant must meet eligibility requirements for appointment as a Juvenile Supervision Officer, shall not have disqualifying criminal history pursuant to TAC 349.7 (a)(B-D) and 343.15(c), must obtain current CPR certification, current First Aid certification, current physical restraint training/ certification, and eighty (80) hours of in-hire training that is approved by the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission, within the first six months of employment, to become certified as a Juvenile Supervision Officer. Thereafter, applicant must (maintain and hold certification throughout employment) re-certify every two years, not have disqualifying criminal history, receive eighty (80) hours of training every two years and maintain certification in First Aid, CPR, and physical restraint. Staff should maintain record of completed training for certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1.Must be reliable and motivated towards helping others; be mature, patient, and show evidence of personal qualities or character and empathy; be able to use good judgment, able to control temper, relate in a friendly manner and follow guidelines, policies, and procedures; and be able to work in close contact with children (10-16 years of age) and must be able to work with physical, emotionally disturbed, and/or violent children.
2.Basic Typing Skills (minimum of 25 words per minute) and basic knowledge of computers.
3.Ability to communicate fluently, both written and oral, in English.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position should be prepared to deal with emotionally disturbed and/or violent children. You must also be aware of crisis prevention and be familiar with restraint. The threat to physically restrain violent youth, who could pose harm to themselves or others, exists at all times.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The following physical demands would exist in the everyday duties of this position: Standing (40%), Walking (40%), Sitting (20%); Lifting and/or Carrying (1-45 lbs.) - charts, clothing, etc.; Pushing and/or Pulling in physical restraint; Reaching to retain objects in high places; Stooping and/or Kneeling to search or check under chairs, tables, etc (for contraband); Speaking and Hearing in order to communicate with the juveniles; and Sight in order to maintain security of the facility and juveniles.
CONFIDENTIALITY
This position has access to juvenile criminal records, social histories, school records, psychological evaluations, psychiatric evaluations, etc.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Upon job offer, applicant must be able to pass a background check, drug test, a psychological exam, and provide a military discharge certificate, all of which are subject to annual review.
