Position Summary
Indian River State College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor I – Physics. a dynamic opportunity for an educator passionate about inspiring students and advancing scientific understanding. We are seeking a collaborative and innovative faculty member with a strong foundation in physics and a commitment to student success. The successful candidate will:

Job Description
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Preparing, instructing, and grading all class and laboratory coursework;
- Assigning final grades;
- Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students;
- Participation in grant writing activities individually or on a team to improve student learning, success, and completion;
- Engaging in activities to improve student learning, retention, and completion;
- Serving the community;
- Serving effectively on college committees and workgroups
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- Master’s degree in Physics required, Ph.D. in Physics is preferred;
- Minimum of two years teaching experience in a post-secondary institution is preferred;
- Proven knowledge of and experience in teaching introductory, trigonometry based, and calculus based physics courses preferred;
- Research and/or publication useful to classroom instruction encouraged;
- Excellent communication skills- both oral and written;
- Ability to develop courses and teach in a variety of formats including, but not limited to, live/traditional, online, and blended;
- Ability to develop, edit, and teach undergraduate laboratory classes;
- Ability to work with and teach to diverse populations is essential;
- Ability to apply traditional and innovative technologies is essential;
- Ability to develop and/or implement strategies to support students’ course success, retention, and program completion is essential;
- A willingness to make students active partners in the teaching/ learning process;
- Ability to communicate the concepts and theories of physics in practical ways;
- Ability to use data and assessment tools in the evaluation and improvement of instruction;
- All instructors must meet the appropriate credentialing requirement for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Duties and responsibilities associated with teaching a minimum of 36 semester hours per academic year;
- Preparing a syllabus for each lecture and lab course;
- Grading all quizzes, tests, and written assignments; and entering grades in Blackboard gradebook on a timely basis;
- Assigning final grades;
- Developing and maintaining course management and internet shells;
- Instructing assigned classes and laboratories;
- Participating in development of retention and core completion strategies;
- Developing and maintaining course management through college’s Learning Management system;
- Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students;
- Cooperating in Department budget preparation and in course planning and development;
- Assisting with Departmental projects and programs;
- Serve on at least one College committee/workgroup;
- Developing and/or implementing strategies to support students’ success, retention, and program completion.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires an ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and to present verbal lectures/demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. Some lifting of computer and electronic equipment may be required. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
