JOB SUMMARY:
Under minimal supervision, Upward Bound Instructors support the development and implementation of an interdisciplinary curriculum, including needs assessments and pre- and post-assessments, for high school students from underrepresented backgrounds. Instructors deliver high-quality classroom instruction in assigned academic subjects, evaluate individual student needs, and provide targeted tutoring and academic support as necessary.
Course content is designed to be dynamic, engaging, and student-centered, emphasizing project-based learning, collaboration, and teamwork while incorporating multicultural perspectives. Instructors foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that encourages active participation, promotes student engagement, and demonstrates a strong commitment to helping students achieve academic success.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Develops and implements engaging and interactive lesson plans in various subjects, including mathematics, science, English, foreign languages, and social studies.
· Enforce and abide by UB rules and regulations
· Participate in Staff Training, scheduled staff meetings, etc.
· Provides individualized tutoring and academic support to students to enhance their understanding and performance in core subjects.
· Monitors and assesses student progress regularly, provides constructive feedback to students and their parents or guardians.
· Collaborates with other instructors and staff members to coordinate educational activities, workshops, and field trips.
· Mentors and guides students in setting academic goals and developing effective study skills.
· Assists students in preparing for standardized tests, including ACT and SAT, by offering test-taking strategies and practice sessions.
· Provides guidance and support to students in the college application process, including researching colleges, writing personal statements, and applying for scholarships and financial aid.
· Maintains accurate records of student attendance, academic performance, and program activities.
· Understands and respects diverse believes and/or opinions with students and staff
· Maintains a safe working area and conditions at all times
· Dresses professionally and appropriately as related to the discipline
· Completes all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
· Bachelor's degree in Education, Mathematics, Science, English, or a related discipline.
· A minimum of two years teaching experience in the specific subject matter, preferred.
· Previous experience in teaching or tutoring, preferably with high school students from diverse backgrounds.
· Knowledge of curriculum development and instructional strategies tailored to meet the needs of disadvantaged youth.
· Familiarity with college admissions processes, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.
· Strong interpersonal skills, patient and the ability to establish rapport with students, parents, and colleagues.
· Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, attention to detail and a passion for teaching.
· Adaptability to meet the diverse needs of our students
· Willingness to extend self to help students succeed
· Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
· Proficiency in using educational technology and online learning platforms.
· Current knowledge of programs, objectives, and requirements

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· The ability to stand, sit, and move around for extended periods.
· Manual dexterity to operate a computer and classroom equipment.
· Ability to lift and carry educational materials and supplies, up to 25 pounds.
