Job Summary: The Teacher to be responsible for performing a variety of skilled tasks related to education of students at Damar Charter Academy with specific functions such as, setting the tone of instruction for the class, developing and participating in activities that promote the development of skills identified in Individual Education Plans (IEPs) including academics, behavioral stability, communication skills, social functioning skills, independence (self help and daily living) skills, and vocational skills. The Teacher will also be responsible for completing state assessments such as ISTAR or ISTEP, and other specific assessments (WIAT-II, ABAS-II, CBC, WRAT, CBMs, FBAs).

Responsibilities

Dependable

  • Attends mandatory staff meeting and other meetings as assigned.

Active

  • Operates Damar vehicles and or personal vehicles to transport residents or perform other work-related duties.
  • Works with students, professional and other Para-professional staff, residents’ families, and community to provide for proper educational habilitation.
  • Serves as a resource by tutoring students in academic subjects, as identified in the standards-based IEP.
  • Actively participates in staff training programs designed to increase overall skills.
  • Participates in programs designed to aid in the habilitation and training/treatment of the students.
  • Performs varied services including instructional, clerical, supervisory, housekeeping, and behavioral management duties as they relate to the school day.
  • Develops and implements standards-based IEPs, daily/weekly class and lesson plans.
  • Teaches students to acquire academic, self-help, daily living and social skills, as stated in the standards-based IEP.
  • Completes reports on the standards-based IEP goals, skills and classroom performance of each student.
  • Effectively responds to and manages crisis situations, which may include student physical aggression.
  • Conducts and supervises recreational and life enrichment activities as they relate to the school day.
  • Observes, records, and reports the condition and behavior of the students, including maintaining daily records of events during the school day, particularly those in the standards-based IEP.
  • Directs support staff within the classroom to ensure safe environment conducive to learning.
  • Consistently implements behavior management plans to reduce clients’ maladaptive behaviors and promote appropriate social behaviors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Updates Student Information System daily for attendance, class planning, communication, record keeping.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures as defined in the Employee Handbook and Damar Operational Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Completes incident reports, including reporting any suspected exploitation, abuse or neglect of a student.

  • Completes and updates mandatory training and other licensure related items in a timely manner.
  • Maintains documentation that is accurate and legible.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in education.

Experience: Experience in Special Education desired.

Equipment Familiarity: Proficiency with MS Office applications including: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Certifications, Licenses or Special Training:

  • Valid Indiana Teaching License. 
  • Special Ed and/or subject area licensing required (depending on class assignment).
  • Highly Qualified status required (ability to fulfill Highly Qualified requirements within 3 years).
  • Minimum age of 21 depending on program and / or department requirements.
  • Must meet and maintain background screening requirements for all Damar Programs as detailed in policy 1.HR.02 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license and driving record that meets eligibility requirements of Damar’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving).
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical required.

  • Knowledge of education law and standards-based Individual Education Planning desired.

  • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training is required.
